Apple Maps Beats Google Maps and Waze in Navigation Test

Apple Maps Beats Google Maps and Waze in Navigation Test

Posted March 9, 2013 at 12:14am by iClarified
In a secret road challenge performed by PC Mag, Apple Maps beat out Google Maps and Waze in navigating Cupertino.

PC Mag's John Dvorak, podcaster Leo LaPorte, TWiT CEO Lisa Kentzell, and marketing guy Glenn Rubenstein were in three different cars each using a different navigation system. With a few stops to make including a meeting at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, they headed out using their favorite apps to get there.

Leo LaPorte was using Waze but it misdirected him in one instance which caused him to take 'forever' to get there. He was lost at another location for unknown reasons putting him in last place.

In second came Google Maps used by Dvorak. He was directed to cut across town; whereas, Glenn Rubenstein, who used Apple Maps, was directed onto the freeway.

Suddenly, Glenn jumped on to the freeway as Google Maps directed me through the city streets for a cut across town. At the time, this seemed like a better route, not to mention a more scenic one. But the long stoplights in Sunnyvale are dreadful. Glenn arrived at least five minutes ahead of me. I gave the nod to Apple and now wonder what the fuss was about.

Let us know what your thoughts are. Has Apple Maps become a viable alternative to Google Maps?

Yea sure, maybe that time apple won the battle on there current maps app but i used it to get to blue mountain in PA and it was trying to make me take a walking bridge with my car which was made for people to cross 35 width bridge. Really!

by the time apple finishes US and then extends for other continents, Google would be completing MARS nd extending to other galaxies, they are light years away, and we would not take apple or their fanatic's word on this

This is hilarious and so true... I love google maps, and I think Apple paid someone to write that they are better than google. That is just hilarious...

It's pointless to test map navigation in Cupertino, CA which happens to be Apple's HQ's location.

Hi friends, apple maps are designed to show navigation routes precisely only to the places around cupertino. What about other places and other countries?

Map preference comes from where you live. Apple maps here work perfect. Never had one issue and have used it daily because of being in the real estate business.

Living in LA I have tested google and apple maps weekly and google routinely wins. Mostly when it comes to traveling to lesser populated areas like when I go hiking or visit places like topanga. Apple really drops the ball in those cases. I really want to just switch to apple maps because of the intervention with the os but I just can't do so yet.

This story is a joke, right? Apple Maps going to Cupertino? How about Google Maps going to Mountain View or Waze going to Palo Atlo?

Love apple but apple maps cannot compare to google's in jamaica. It will take time tho because similarly when I got my first iPhone, google maps sucked till a few years when it became more dependable

Apple maps works perfectly in israel. It navigates very accurate and i prefer it over waze.

it's funny you say that because I helped creating Waze in Israel and Waze is a social GPS App that is nothing like Apple Maps or Google but I do know one thing for sure, for 6 month after Apple dropped google Maps, millions of people wrote to Apple complaining and begging them to return google Maps back! That by itself tells you everything you need to know about Apple Maps!!!

I have Nothing against waze, its a good nav app. But i dont like it for it looks. I dont like how the roads look like. But it always comes down to personal preference.

Apple Maps isn't too bad (in England at least) if you give it a postcode. The big problem is the POI database which is scarce and inaccurate.

If you would do your research this one of the few times that apple has gotten praise in a PC Mag article. Especially from the guy who wrote it.

Yeah sure, maybe Apple maps work great in NY or LA, but how about the rest of the world? In case of Serbia, Apple maps display only the major higways throughout the country, while iOS 5 with Google maps used to have complete coverage up to the smallest road in every Serbian city. Should I consider iOS 6 an upgrade?!
