Saurik on 'Competition vs. Community'

Posted July 13, 2014 at 9:47pm by iClarified
Jay Freeman, the developer of Cydia, has posted a lengthy article explaining the background behind Cydia, his motivations to work on the project, and how he looks at competition. The post follows the announcement of the new iMods installer app.

So, some people are going to hate me for this post, and I've said some of this before, but I really want to express it in more detail. I've been wanting to write something like this for a long time, and recently I think I've been in a mindset where I need to think through some of these thoughts anyway, so "here goes nothing".

Suarik's post is an extensive one, addressing topics such as: Cydia as a Business, Community Efforts, Abnormal Motivation, My Involvement, Cydia as a Job, The Bitter Truths, Other's Opportunity, My Motivations, Money Does Not Motivate Me, Competition Does Not Motivate Me, Why Would I Bother?, The Cult of Competition, Picking Fights Loses People, Valuing Repositories, Earning Trust, Not Even Effective, and Competing with Cydia.

We suggest you read the entire post; however, below you can find suarik's closing remarks on 'Competing with Cydia':

---
With all this background, we now can hopefully understand what my response is to competition: I am not "motivated", and in fact I tend to get stressed out and avoid the project in question; I instead work on other things that seem happier, and fall back on "obligation" and "pride" to keep the project maintained.

Maybe I'm just being egotistical here, but I think I add a lot of value to the jailbreak community: I am not "just a storefront". However, if you compete with me on the storefront, you not only indirectly affect my interest to keep working in the community, but you directly affect my ability to spend time doing so.

I always then feel like I have to ask people who see jailbreaking as an "opportunity to better monetize what that saurik chump won't": are you actually prepared to handle the situation where I get fed up and leave? Do you rely on my software? Are you relying indirectly on the people who in turn rely on me, or my friends?

Because if you are, you aren't just picking a fight, you are walking into one you can't win: where on the one side is losing quickly, and the other side is still losing, it's just losing a little bit later, after the infrastructure you are relying on crumbles and key parts of the developer and support community (first- and third- party) disappear.

You might think that all the things that I or SaurikIT contribute are "givens" you can rely on, and that I will maintain them even after you sap the fun of it and bleed away the funding; but I don't have to, won't want to, and wouldn't be able to afford to. Nor, to be clear, should anyone (user or developer) feel entitled to me doing so :(.

Saurik, don't mind the senseless, selfish, reprehensible rhetoric of the naysayers. Thank you for all your work. It is appreciated.

Jay, thank you tremendously for all the hard work you have put in within the 7 years. Words cannot even come close to express the gratitude what you have implemented for the general public and also for the devs as well. Keep up the spectacular work and remember, haters will ALWAYS do their jobs because that's what they do best. Without your assistance and innovations, Apple will decline in popularity. We, as in the general public, as well as the devs, need a leader such as yourself. Please do not give up on your passion and your extreme interest what we, the general public, call jailbreaking. Please keep fighting the good fight because we need you Saurik!

Him or not, Apple will still rid above the others. I still like my iDevices without jailbreak but as far as security goes that's mainly why it's popular.

When you re right code or change any intended device for a higher purpose you are not normal. Normal is fighting if one os is better than another, the truth is cydia is a key to apples success with out it apple ios is not being developed. Every cydia idea is taken with out compensation by apple and added to the next ios. Without some type of religion one may question things, and questioning things leads to revolutionary ideas like 1776. It is time is Americans free from the idea that they have to justify their odd behavior next time just go out with your friend and forget about explanations or let me do it for you.

I have no reason to hate, he did In fact create Cydia and with out it there would be no jailbreak, thank you to Saurik(Jay Freeman), and all other devs out there with this community, and especially those who take the time to find exploits for the users, we wouldn't be able to install cydia without you :) (Not so much love for the pangu devs btw, man what is up with you guys and hacking, Chinese malware thats low ^_^

Hi please can you tell me if they are saying cydia will be down or not ?
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - July 14, 2014 at 12:51pm
I doubt it will be down. Apple knows this will end their success if they bought it down.

If ios becomes non jailbreakable than sales will drop and android will take over. Maybe that won't be such a bad thing after all.
farpthor
farpthor - July 14, 2014 at 2:40am
The sales will drop, like, nothing percent. Jailbreak once was a way to people unlock their phones. Now it's just about adding features, functionalities. With the decline in innovative features and the catching up of top notch android phones, the appeal of jailbreaking is shrinking.

To SaurikisA$$, I totally agree with you and there beside you as I totally agree that we wait forever for a jailbreak and either or the jailbreak and Cydia are so buggy and I'm not going to install such a horrible system on $1000 phone which cost me with taxes and case to protect !!! It's just not worth the risk of permanently damage such an expensive electronic

Ipol - July 15, 2014 at 12:53am
Ahaha ! Newbie ! I install all ever on my 1000$ phone and nothing could broke it ! its an apple, not droid ! Lol ! And i'm there since 2g
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - July 14, 2014 at 1:39am
That's what you get for adding too many features as if it's android. Too much to handle. That's why cydia is just asking for more like it's android.

Just one question to Saurik, i may look selfish but if you, saurik, are so dissapointed with the Pangu team, why dont you release an ios verions downgrade to the public and be positive that ee will follow you instead of any other team aput there. As long as we still have a great jailbreak for our devices we or at least me will do.
Jeff
Jeff - July 14, 2014 at 12:02am
I should add one last thing and that is after installing the evasion jailbreak for iOS 7 my reception for phone calls was greatly reduced and started having dropped calls and non-completed calls so I I had no choice but to re-install iOS 7 and jailbreak it or not so that I could have the ability to make phone calls again. And after using Pango I then had horribly disappointing results with tweaks not working at all all and not working properly and phone did many weird things on it's own among shutting down going into safe mode so on and so on so I have decided I am no longer going to jailbreak

Jeff - July 13, 2014 at 11:11pm
I have just in the last few days have given up on jailbreaking my devices anymore. After waiting a very long time for the evasion team to jailbreak iOS 7 and having so many conflicting issues with different tweaks not working together, my iPhone crashing or rebooting on its own has become a real problem for me. Everybody since early this year have been talking about the upcoming iOS 8 and the jailbreaking of it and then pangu burning through three exploits on 7.1.1 and 7.1.2 After consideration for a good week on whether to update and jailbreak 7.1.2 and finally doing so I have had so many problems and issues with my iPhone crashing and double-clicking the home button only to it rebooting my iPhone and many of the tweaks no longer working together or not even been updated has caused me to totally lose faith in community jailbreaking communit

I've been jailbreaking since iOS 3 and had jailbroken very very many devices and I sure as hell know what I'm doing so don't come off as if I don't because I do
Jeff
Jeff - July 14, 2014 at 4:16am
by the way you don't need to be calling people names like buffoon because I have not called anybody any names on here as I have more respect for people. I also install very very few tweaks on my devices and I know what I'm doing and I make sure that they are compatible the problem is with the jailbreak and or cydia being buggy, that's what I'm saying. As time has gone on since 2007 there were virtually no problem but over the years things have been come more and more buggy and your system is just not stable anymore when you jailbreak plain and simple.
Jeff
Jeff - July 14, 2014 at 4:31am
IClare you should also know that some of the problem lies with the developers and the tweaks that they make as for an example I had installed A tweak to put in the status bar the weather and megabytes and the day and right after install my phone would crash and go into safe mode and I contacted the developer and he told me he was aware of the problem and that would be a fixed soon but after weeks of waiting there was no fix so I contacted developer again and he said his computer had crashed. That tweet continued to be sold on Cydia and not removed which is what should have been done until the problem could have been corrected but all he was interested in is money like most people unfortunately.

What are you saying there will be NO JAILBREAK ANYMORE? Thats all I care about
Anon
Anon - July 13, 2014 at 10:23pm
As a long time jail breaker (since the days of summerboard and Installous), I will be honest and say I look forward to the day where Cydia is no longer the monopoly in this area. Cydia is old and antiquated looking, not user-friendly, and is clunky. Sauria is just sitting back on his cash cow with no interest in making it better. So, with that in mind, bring on the competition!!
