Tim Cook: Apple Will Offer API for Apple TV's Universal Search

Posted October 4, 2015 at 7:17am by iClarified
Tim Cook revealed that Apple plans to open an API for the Universal Search feature on the new Apple TV, in an interview with BuzzFeed.

“At launch we’ll have iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, and HBO — so we’ll have five major inputs into universal search initially,” Cook said. “But we’re also opening an API, so that others can join in.”

“I think that many, many people will want to be in that search,” Cook said. “And that’s great for users. Think about your experience today. Even if you’re fortunate enough to have the content you want to watch in an app, you sometimes don’t remember exactly where that show is, so you’re going to Netflix or Hulu or Showtime. You shouldn’t have to do that. It should be very simple.”

Cook also assured the site that it will be easy to see which service lets you watch searched content for free. “It will be clear which service is free,” he said.

The new Apple TV is set to arrive at the end of the month. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.

This device is worth getting. There will be a jailbreak. ATV2 jailbreak is starting to fall apart apps are loosing links as servers get updated, KODI restarts every other time you play a video. This new Apple TV has ample space and power to dump plenty of additional apps in it. 4k is irrelevant still as there aren't any TV channels with 4k content. Comcast said at the beginning of last year it would have 4 channels in 4k by the end of 2014 and we still have no outlook for any channels to broadcast 4k on any platform. The only 4k there is out there are random YouTube videos that are going to stream poorly anyway. 4k output higher than 30fps requires better TV's than what's out there right now. IMO When OLed 4k 240hz 3D TV's under $2500 then 4k will matter. New iPhone 6s & plus with 4k video ability will help drive the industry to new hardware and data/cable thorough-put that eventually 4k regular content will be the norm. 10 more years before you see Hulu in 4k etc. Put that time date quote in your time capsule!

It doesn't support 4K though so it'll probably be snappy enough but no 4K is pretty lame for a current generation TV box.
