The Apple Watch Has Been Jailbroken!

Hacker Max Bazaliy has jailbroken the Apple Watch, demonstrating the achievement at the DEFCON security conference in Las Vegas today.

Bazaliy is a security researcher at Lookout and co-founder of the Fried Apple team. During a presentation at DEFCON (you can download the slides from here), he detailed the steps taken to get to a fully jailbroken device.

The jailbroken Apple Watch provides access to SMS, Calls, Health, Photos and Emails synced to the Watch, iPhone GPS location, microphone, and Apple Pay. Bazaliy says he has full access to the jailbroken watch file system including sqlite3 databases for Messages, Call History, Contacts, and Emails.

In order to get SSH working, Bluetooth is used to forward the connection from an iPhone to the watch. Bazaliy says his next steps for the jailbreak are to interpose or trampoline system functions, catch data on sync with an iPhone, create tweaks for a watch and run frida and radare. It's unclear if there are plans to release the jailbreak publicly but we'll let you know if we hear more.

This is nonsense, good luck getting it to run without crashing. Jailbreak is currently unstable. I wanted this to happen from way back when but now it's rubbish that I understand how useless jailbreaks are becoming. It's slow to keep up and even if it happens may God help you not to break your watch cause once you get your new device back ask that jailbreak you had is gone for good SSH or no SSH. So have fun waiting for a public release I wanted to see the jailbreak for iOS 10.3.2 and even 3.3.3 or 11 will it happen? That's the big question. And if it does so what it will not last.

For What?... Long term goals, provide applications to the watch that are prohibited in the app store - ie, watches that have custom watch faces (Hermès watch face costs over $200 us to have) . Give apps access to APIs on the device that are not normally accessible to apps - eg, openGL. Currently apps can only provide a UI based on Apple's templates. This will also enable apps to look and behave how they want. If your answer is something like: I don't want apps to have access to everything, I don't want them to look like anything, and I don't need openGL. Then this is not for you or your apple watch.

It’ll only be cool if you can do things like change ringtone/notification sounds and create watch faces

people.....this is silly...Apple watch jailbreak is not for cydia n crap like that. its just access to internal file system and if watch is paired with an iphone.....to get into the iphone data over bt...this is not a "lets install cydia and get Springtomize watch edition tweak for applewatch"....

The Apple Watch is very useful I have had mine for about 3 weeks now and it’s one of those things now I’ve got it I can’t live without people say if you have a iPhone what’s the point there is a point you still need your phone for a lot of things but the watch is great for things like notification glances, quick reply’s, fitness tracking and motivation and of course telling the damn time with customisable watch faces it’s great.

What's the point of jail breaking a watch when it already works well without it ? Duh!

I wonder how this would affect how secure Apple Pay is? Luckily it worked so scarcely for me I stopped using it.
