More iPhone 4 troubles continue, as many users are reporting that their Proximity sensors on their iPhone 4's are not working as they should, being too sensitive and sometimes unresponsive. This is resulting in displays turning off in the middle of calls, and also causing the user to unknowingly hit the mute button with their cheek. Another issue is damaged SIM cards, and the iPhone not recognizing certain SIMs. iTunes will also display a message saying there is a problem with the SIM card.
Is the iPhone 4 plagued with issues? Or is everyone just making a big deal and trying to find flaws of the new device.

The clear suspect in this bizarre behavior appears to be the iPhone 4's proximity sensor, mouthful of a term that describes the sensor that detects your face's location relative to the screen, and enables or disables the display accordingly. On the iPhone 3GS, the proximity sensor was located to the left of the earpiece speaker. But that space on iPhone 4 is now occupied by the front-facing camera, and the proximity sensor is above the earpiece.

I think everybody should have a look at this post that was deleted from the Apple support forums by Apple. It seems that they have no interest in fixing this issue or even making a statement on it unless they are forced to by a lawsuit or something to that effect. I am VERY disappointed in Apple. I have been a fan for over 15 years. It seems as if they have forgotten who they are and just becoming a big bully now. (see below)

Wow just cause of this attitude of apple employees They are being SUED by lawyers well apple you should take this time and save yourself from another class action law suit for proximity sensors
PS ~ Apple mods now don't be wasting your time deleting this post since I have a right to say stuff when you guys sell us your defective product and I think if apple doesn't address this issue then we all should return the Iphone 4 at lease those who are having this proximity issues.
And also apple instead of deleting peoples post how about investigating why Iphone 4 proximity sensor is going haywire and maybe you will save yourself from another law suit and also people who are having problem with there iphone 4 with the proximity sensor do report it to KCR LEGAL LAW FIRM
I just took off the bumper that apple sells to protect the phone and the proximity sensor does not mess up as Mich as it did with the bumper off! It is not a complete fix but I feel it helps a lot!
I got the new phone and I agree about the proximity sensor. I constantly put people on mute or hang up. I hope it can be fixed with a software update. Even if it does not fix however, it is still the greatest phone I've ever had!

it seems like most of it is software issues because i have plenty of issues and i own a 3gs..
not only that the iphone 4 is a brand new phone. expect it to have some problems and bugs at first. as long as they fix it sooner than later its all good
I had this happen once yesterday and once this morning. According to AT&T, the factory shipped sim cards are known to have some issues. They said they have seen it with the 3GS. They replaced my sim, so far so good. Hope I don't need a replacement.

I left an earlier reply that I suffered the dreaded "no sim card" issue. I went to an ATT store and at first they were going to charge me $15 for a replacement sim and I looked at the guy like what planet do you think I come from. Anyway after getting me free new sim card it was not 10 minutes more before the issue re-occurred. I did setup up a genius bar appointment for tomorrow earlier today, but I called back this evening and they said come to the store. It took some explaining on what I was experiencing, but they did exchange the phone and I have been good to go for the last 3 hours.
My proximity sensor started to get robot after upgrading my 3GS to ios4. I have experienced it. It sucks. I doubt it's the iPhone 4, just software issue
It does matter to us having the issue. I am expirencing the no sim card issue and basically have an expensive itouch. I went to AT&T this evening and they replaced my SIM card and within ten minutes of the replacement being active I got the dreaded no SIM card error. I now have a genius bar appointment tomorrow evening. This has not been a pleasant expierance.
have you tried a restore?
did you restore from backup if so was it a jailbroken backup?
yeah people don't think about these common sense things that can/will effect the iphone.
Bottom line is that people are searching for flaws and their bitching is louder because it's an iphone.
so because your iphone works a treat everyone else should grow up? they simply MUST be being childish because its unfathomable that other people's iphones are screwing up if youre works fine and you're happy with it...
so after paying $900 for the phone and it does not work properly , I should suck it and not even complain? WTF!!! if apple don't do their job we as customer have every right to complain and inform the public about the defects so people will be aware.
I'm glad I'm not the only one with iPhone 4 issues. Mine does all the above. I called apple and they said they've never heard of such. (regarding the proximity issues that is)
i had the same proximity sensor problem with my 3Gs and a couple of my friends had that problem too with their 3Gs phones. We would constantly hit the mute button with our cheeks so I don't think that problem is exclusively on the iPhone 4 becasuse so far i haven't had that problem at all with my iPhone 4.
Plagued with issues? Come on! When you sell 600,000 of anything, much less something as complex as an iPhone, some won't work perfectly or at all. I know that's not what people experiencing these issues want to hear but it's simply a fact.
it seems to be more than the average few defected products though, complaints are popping up everywhere, plus when people pay the large price of these products they expect better, that's the whole reason apple can charge such extortionate amounts, because you're paying for the apple brand, which is synonymous with build quality, if apple had traditionally released all their products with this many problems they wouldn't be quite the force of reckoning they are
It happened to me 2-3 times that in the middle of the call, I hear the beep sound and noticed that the device is having this fking problem!
Big time apple fan but this time they screwed up! Shame on you mr jobs!
