How to Jailbreak Your iPod Touch 2G Using RedSn0w (Mac) [4.2.1]

Posted November 24, 2010 at 7:38pm by iClarified
These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPod touch 2G on the 4.2.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac. At this time RedSn0w .9.6b4 cannot jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on the MC model of the iPod touch 2G. Only users with non-MC models should continue with this tutorial.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.2.1 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

4.2.1 (2G): iPod2,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

Extract the redsn0w app from the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.

Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.

When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.

*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320x480. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo

Notice that RedSn0w has options to Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you do not need multitasking we would recommend deselecting it as it makes your iPod touch 2G run very slow.

Click the Next button to continue

No, that's not right. How do I make iTunes do the update? I'm stuck at this point: ---- Step Two Connect your iPod to the computer and launch iTunes. Select your iPod from the list of devices on the left. -------- I never get a "list of devices on the left" -- I get routed to Apple websites.

OK, got it, after unplugging, letting the iPod power off, and reconnecting everything and it found and did the update as described.

ah, something obvious not stated: open the folder, and start RedSn0w -- and then navigate to the Pwnage folder and select the updater

> Step Two > Connect your iPod to the computer Directly not through a hub? > and launch iTunes. Launch iTunes on the iPod, or the Mac, or both? Tried variations on this and never got past this point yet. Not a MC iPod, definitely Gen2, verified I have the files specified, folder named Pwnage, on the desktop

I got all the way up to after doing that hold the power, then hold the home, then release power step, then a message popped up, but i clicked something and it went away. I tried doing the same thing all over again, but now it says I have a fixed model, and redsn0w doesn't support it. Please help me :(

If your a PC user just hit shift instead of Option. All the other steps are the same you have to have the PC version of both the restore and redsnow. Redsnow crashed on my first try second try...worked like a charm. Thank you so much for the tutorial.

It worked perfectly, but when I try to open Cydia, it crashes and when I try to open a link from my mails, it lags and goes to the lock screen. I tried both the soft and hard reset but it didn't fix the problem. Please help me.
