iPhone Dev-Team Announces Release Plans for 'Backup Plan' Untethered Jailbreak

Posted December 24, 2010 at 9:15am by iClarified
The iPhone Dev-Team has announced plans to release their 'backup plan' untether this holiday weekend.

--
Over the Christmas weekend we’ll be releasing a version of redsn0w that implements the 'backup plan' to the 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak. We’re seeking your help to test this redsn0w and find any bugs before we do a general release!

(If you have an iPhone 3G, or an old-bootrom ipt2g or iPhone 3GS, you already have an untethered jailbreak! Just use the latest public redsn0w.)

To keep things manageable, this will be a Mac-only test program. We also request that any volunteers *NOT* need the ultrasn0w unlock (in case things go very wrong).

Right now, the 'backup plan' requires that you have the 4.2b3 IPSW on your Mac, and that Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH hashes. Please don’t pirate that 4.2b3 IPSW! (We’re also working on a way that this technique might apply to all those with 4.1 IPSWs, but that’s not the first goal right now.)

If you fit all the above qualifications, please follow @redsn0w_testers on twitter for announcements, and use the comments section here for feedback. Thanks very much for your help, and Happy Holidays!

We'll provide you with more information and instructions when it becomes available.

Comex is still working on his preferred untether but it looks like it won't be available by Christmas.

Guys do not listen to us users. You are doing a good job. It is difficult to manipulate an existing JB. We will keep waiting. Just do it.

I'm confused. Is "please don't pirate 4.2b3 IPSW" code for "you'll need to first pirate 4.2b3 IPSW"? Or are they really saying we shouldn't pirate 4.2b3 IPSW? Is this the longest we've ever gone without an untethered jailbreak? I'm dying over here with my iPad, iPod and iPhone, but love you guys for all you've done for us, and hope for the best!

EVEN IF YOU PIRATE THE IPSW.... it wouldnt matter because you WIL REQUIRE the 4.2b3 SHSH blobs which if you don't have them you cant do the jailbreak.... PIRATE the IPSW all day long but it wont change anything... you wont have the untethered JB and it will probably require a restore

The Firmware umbrella takes care of that part for you..... I am still on 3.1.3 and have my 4.2b3 (8c5115c) blobs

only if you have had official access to get the blob, majority of user will not have the 4.2b3 blob bcuz itunes simple would not sign it since they werent for develepment

Thanks Bonez for the information. It clears things up. I guess I'll have to continue to wait for the untethered full release, or go tethered.

Hello guys, one question regarding the untethered jailbreak on old bootrom iphone 3gs. I am currently on 4.0 and want to update to 4.2.1. On dev team forum it was mentioned that redsn0w also updates your BB, is that true? I would like to avoid that! For unlock I would simply use ultrasn0w 1.2. thanks

since in order to use redsn0w, you must already have updated to itunes yes your bb would be updated which is bad right now if you need the unlock and want to stay away from the ipads bb. Look for a custom ipsw for 3gs on 4.2.1 or use pwnagetool with the correct bundles
well then

will this always require 4.2b3 shsh blobs

Now is about the time most of us pray for a GeoHot sighting where he swoops in for the rescue. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the contributions of the scene but the releases are at a snails pace, I no longer remember when 4.2.1 was even released anymore. It's especially tough on the ipad, so many apps came out with 4.2 dependant updates. I don't really even get the point of this weekend's release except from 'it's an accomplishment' standpoint. It still doesn't include the majority of users, it's strictly for those with developer's access. Seems like it's something that should have still stayed in house as 'well we got this part working' type of thing. It's great that it can be done but it comes off as more of a tease, it adresses such a small segment of the total jailbreak userbase. what it really all means is they aren't as close as we had all hoped on releasing a funtional untethered solution for the majority of us.

I totally agree. It just gets people's hopes up with no instant outcome

So if you need 4.2b3 IPSW to perform backup plan and you shouldn't "Pirate" it how the hell are people other than devs going to take advantage of this?
bonez
bonez - December 24, 2010 at 11:47am
You dont.... thats the point... even if you had the ipsw you would still need the SHSH blobs for 4.2b3, this is for the 10% of people who are involved with developers, thats why most developers sell their empty device spots to the public to increase the number of the public that has access to the betas

Ummm...wrong. I'm on 4.01 and both cydia and tiny umbrella have my SHSH blobs all the way to 4.2b3. Just run cydia and you will see at the top which blobs are saved for your phone. If you're jailbroken and you had cydia or TU save your blobs, you're good to go. If you're not jailbroken and you have the latest firmware, then it's a different story. Stop spreading disinformation.

we'll see, very soon. theres a reason they said not to pirate the ipsw. i predict a good bit of people will be complaining about "not eligible for the requested build" errors. Unless you have had some form of developer access either urself or by paying some dev for one of their device spots or by some miracle, you will not have an shsh blob for 4.2b3 end of story. If you never emailed your UDID to anyone then chances are slim that you have the blobs
