The NYTimes app has been updated with expanded content, video and slideshows, breaking news alerts, favorites, and more

The best news for your iPhone just got even better. The improved NYTimes app for iPhone now has more content including blogs, videos and slide shows. Free until early 2011.

Features:
Enjoy offline and online reading of content from all sections of The Times, including blogs. Experience world-class multimedia with video and slide shows located within articles and in the new Video and Photos sections. Bookmark frequently visited sections or blogs and save articles in the new Favorites section. Share articles, photos and videos through Facebook, Twitter and e-mail. And, get breaking news alerts to be the first to read about events as soon as they occur.

Am I the only one who feels the update is a step backwards? There used to be an extra tab along the bottom, and they were customizable using the standard UITabController feature in which you can drag tabs from the More tab to any of the other tab locations. No longer. Plus, background updates seem to cause a lot of lag and sometimes complete lack of responsiveness. Makes the app much less efficient to use.
