AT&T Announces It Will Throttle Unlimited Data Plan Customers

Posted July 29, 2011 at 10:01pm by iClarified
AT&T has announced that it will throttle unlimited data plan customers starting in October.

-
Like other wireless companies, we're taking steps to manage exploding demand for mobile data. Many experts agree the country is facing a serious wireless spectrum crunch. We're responding on many levels, including investing billions in our wireless network this year and working to acquire additional network capacity. We're also taking additional, more immediate measures to help address network congestion.

One new measure is a step that may reduce the data throughput speed experienced by a very small minority of smartphone customers who are on unlimited plans - those whose extraordinary level of data usage puts them in the top 5 percent of our heaviest data users in a billing period. In fact, these customers on average use 12 times more data than the average of all other smartphone data customers. This step will not apply to our 15 million smartphone customers on a tiered data plan or the vast majority of smartphone customers who still have unlimited data plans.

Starting October 1, smartphone customers with unlimited data plans may experience reduced speeds once their usage in a billing cycle reaches the level that puts them among the top 5 percent of heaviest data users. These customers can still use unlimited data and their speeds will be restored with the start of the next billing cycle. Before you are affected, we will provide multiple notices, including a grace period.

This change will never impact the vast majority of our customers, and is designed to create a better service experience for all.

I know I'm prolly going to fall into the 5% category but I have to ask, if Att says most of all their customers use less than 2 gb of data which is less then one movie on Netflix, about an hour and a half of music streaming or like three iTunes albums will those people really notice a difference in network quality or does Att just not want to admit to having a crapy network? I drove around downloading lastnight and in very few areas did I ever have download speeds of 230kbs or higher. Most the time I was around 80-110kbs. And when I'm in the middle of town the fastest I have clocked the network was 1.5mbs while being out in almost the middle of nowhere where I live is 3.5mbs

Not that I'm overly happy with AT&T or think they have their customers' best interests in mind but what everyone missing is the amount of abuse they've probably taken from the folks that abuse MyWi (and like programs). I've personally read folks bragging on blogs that AT&T's 3G data was fast enough in their area that they canceled their home internet and tethered off of their iPhone for ALL their Internet use. Thank these folks for the disappearance of the unlimited plans and this new throttling announcement. Also, name ANY other provider that offers truly unlimited data -- and before you spout off, go check their fine print. None offer this now -- not even Sprint...

Just another example of a large firm having all the leverage in a market dominated by two firms. Maybe we should throttle back our payments too? And it's going to be worse with 4G scaled plans.

Sad part is that other provider will do the same. Remember Verizon with their 2GB cap set after ATT?

You sound highly unintelligent when you attack a certain religious group and make spiteful generalizations. Your poor grammar doesn't help either.
