Amazon is working on a smartphone which will be released at the end of next year, according to Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney.

The phone is reportedly being developed with Foxconn's help and will be a "mid-end" phone that does not use the latest and greatest chipsets. Instead the device will compete on price, similar to the Kindle Fire.

Mahaney believes the total cost of the device will be $150-170 and will it would sell to carriers for $170.

Amazon is also said to be integrating a NFC chip into the device that will connect to Amazon Payments.
