UK Network ITV Warns Apple Not to Use Its Name [Update]

Posted February 13, 2012 at 2:23pm by iClarified
ITV, a commercial public service TV network in the United Kingdom, has reportedly sent a letter to Apple warning against using its ITV mark for a rumored television product, says The Telegraph.

Adam Crozier, chief executive of Britain's biggest commercial broadcaster, raised the issue with the company when he took the job in 2010, amid expectations that Apple would follow the pattern of branding used for its iPhone and iPad when it eventually cracked television. At the time, ITV, the broadcaster of popular period drama Downton Abbey, received assurances that Apple would not muscle into its territory, at least in the UK.

Interesting, the Apple TV was originally branded as the iTV at reveal; however, Apple quickly changed that name. The current Apple TV is still considered a hobby by Apple. If the company does decide to go full steam ahead in to the television market, iTV would be a much better name. It's unclear if Apple would be will to rebrand the product for the U.K. alone or whether it would consider purchasing ITV outright.

Update:
In a statement to The Verge, an ITV spokesperson said that, "The Telegraph's piece is entirely speculative, and there has been no recent dialogue between ITV and Apple. ITV has no further comment on the matter."

Apple should stick to the name AppleTV. A small concession since they come onto scene late. It may also help the company when they launch TV products. Right now there is a sticky lawsuit with a tiny Chinese co that wont let go the iPad trademark for they anticipated big $ and Apple woundn't pay. Apple already enjoys worldwide recognition. Let it go!

Purchase the name ITV off the UK broadcaster would not happen. They would never sell the name as it's associated with the TV channel and has been for many many years. This is one name Apple will have to give up on. About time the USA realises the world does not belong to them. There is life outside of the states you know!!

Spot on Richard. They will have to cede this name to ITV, not iTV as many will confuse the Brit TV company. Just the way it is.
