Vote on Nano-SIM Postponed as Apple, Nokia, RIM, and SanDisk Battle it Out

Vote on Nano-SIM Postponed as Apple, Nokia, RIM, and SanDisk Battle it Out

Posted March 30, 2012 at 2:23pm by iClarified
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute has postponed a vote on the nano-SIM standard as a battle rages between Apple, Nokia, RIM, SanDisk and others, reports FOSSPatents.

It appears that Nokia's overt unwillingness to license its potentially essential patents in the event that Apple's nano-SIM proposal is adopted and Sandisk's resistance to Nokia's proposal have resulted in an impasse. Sandisk, too, holds patents that may be essential to a new SIM card standard.

RIM has also filed a complaint with ETSI accusing Apple of trying to rig the vote by registering its employees as representatives from other companies.

---
Over the last few days we have observed a number of representatives from one company changing their affiliation over night and registering to the meeting not representing their employer or any of their affiliates but representing a completely different company.

Examples (as of 18:04 CET on 28/03/12) are:
- Jason Adams from Apple (UK) Ltd registered as Bell Mobility
- Dieter Volbert from Vodafone D2 GmbH registered as Telekom Austria AG
- Gavin Clark from Apple (UK) Ltd registered as KT Corp.
- Vinash Khausal from Apple (UK) Ltd registered as SK Telekom

Clause 1.7.1.1 of the ETSI Technical Working Procedures provides that voting by proxy is notpermitted during a Technical Body meeting
---

The ETSI vote has been delayed by a minimum of one month.
