Apple Targets October 2012 for Release of 7-Inch iPad?

Apple is reportedly targeting October 2012 for the release of a 7-inch iPad, according to iMore. The device is said to cost between $200 and $250 making it a strong competitor to the Kindle Fire.

We haven't gotten a firm read on the exact screen dimensions, so we're using 7-inches generically here. Our source has indicated, however, that the 7-inch iPad will be identical in every way to the current 9.7-inch iPad, just scaled down. That seems to include a 2048x1536 resolution display, just like the new iPad. If accurate, that would put the pixel density at around 326 ppi, identical to the iPhone 4S (and higher than the 264 ppi new iPad) retina display. It's hard to imagine a device with a panel like that having a price tag of just $200, especially when the baseline new iPad comes in at $500, but one way Apple will be keeping costs lower is by providing less storage capacity. $200 will get you 8GB. That's identical to the current entry-level iPod touch, which also starts at $200. (And no, Apple won't be replacing the iPod touch with the 7-inch iPad, both devices will remain in the product lineup -- though it'll be interesting to see what happens with iPod touch pricing and storage capacity.)

A recent report from DigiTimes also predicted the release of a 7-inch tablet in 2012 but in August rather than October.

7" iPad ain't a bad idea. Some people like it smaller. Also, with that price it will be a true killer in d tablet Industry. If the rumor is accurate, starting at $200 for 8GB then it will wipe out all other tablets. Amazon, Samsung, hp, dell's tablets will die.

I doubt apple will release a 7" iPad as if you want something smaller to the iPad but similar you can buy a iPod touch a 7" iPad would effect sales

I too can't see what Apple would gain from this. They have phenomenal profit ratios on their products, so what's to be gained by a "race to the bottom"? Selling a cheaper, crapier product just hurts the sales of your better, more profitable products. No one wins when you do that. Let Google have the low end market, it gives people choices while not hurting Apple in the least.

Doesn't make sense unless iphone is released this summer. They wouldn't want any other product cannablizing sales. IF (big if) a 7" ipad were to be released it'd be on its own. Either summer release with iPhone in sept/oct or in sept/oct with iphone this summer. I could see why analysts would think it's be released late fall for christmas but analysts aren't looking at the whole picture here and have been throwing out constant guesses waiting for one to stick.

Doesn't seem like apple Strategy going toe to toe with cheaper products... That's what "old" iPad /iPhone is for....
