Kaspersky Analysing OS X Security at Request of Apple

Kaspersky CTO Nikolai Grebennikov says his firm recently began the process of analyzing OS X at Apple's request, reports Computing.

"Mac OS is really vulnerable," he claimed, "and Apple recently invited us to improve its security. We've begun an analysis of its vulnerabilities, and the malware targeting it," said Grebennikov.

"Our first investigations show Apple doesn't pay enough attention to security. For example, Oracle closed a vulnerability in Java, which was a target for a major botnet several months ago. Apple blocked Oracle from updating Java on Mac OS, and they perform all the udpates themselves. They only released the patch a few weeks ago – two or three months after the Oracle patch. That's far too long," he said. "This botnet, which the security community identified, is a huge sign that Apple's security model isn't perfect."

An article from Computing that quoted Kaspersky CTO Nikolai Grebennikov as saying that Apple "recently invited us to improve its security" is inaccurate and was taken out of context, Kaspersky said. In a Monday statement, Grebennikov said Kaspersky has indeed studied vulnerabilities in Mac OS X, but that work "was conducted independently of Apple." Instead, Apple is "collaborating with us regarding new Mac OS X vulnerabilities and malware that we identify during our analysis." Security firms frequently alert companies to bugs or security threats they uncover. "As Mac OS X market share continues to increase, we expect cyber-criminals to continue to develop new types of malware and attack methods," Grebennikov continued. "In order to meet these new threats, Kaspersky Lab has been conducting an in-depth analysis of Mac OS X vulnerabilities and new forms of malware." The author of the Computing piece, Stuart Sumner, did not immediately respond to a request for comment......http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404408,00.asp

This doesn't sound right. I can see another blog post soon enough saying "apple denies...." kaspersky is the worse antivirus software. They wouldn't go with them.

Of course they say apple does not pay enough attention to security. Why should an IT consulting firm to say, that OSX is pretty safe? They would loose important project right at the beginning.
