Mark Zuckerberg Says Facebook's Biggest Mistake Was Focusing on HTML5

Mark Zuckerberg reportedly said that Facebook's biggest mistake was going with HTML5 for its iOS and mobile apps at TechCrunch Disrupt today.

Today, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Facebook's mobile strategy relied too much on HTML5, rather than native applications. Not only was this a big mistake with mobile, but Zuckerberg says that its biggest mistake period was the focus on HTML5. This is the first time that the Facebook CEO has openly admitted this, but things are looking good for the new iOS native app. According to Zuckerberg, people are consuming twice as many feed stories since the update to the new iOS app, which is great.

Two weeks ago Facebook finally released a native iOS application that vastly improved speeds to address complaints over the HTML5 version of the app.

Today Zuckerberg said more new product is coming, "The first half year has been a little bit slow on product, but for the next six months I expect a lot of really cool stuff."

HTML5 is a great technology but it certainly seems like a mistake to have developed the FB app with HTML5, at least this early. The app just doesn't perform. But HTML5 has its place, and that place is growing in size. I don't think Facebook's failure here reflects that poorly on tech that is still finding its feet.

Really? HTML5 is Facebook's "Biggest Mistake"? How about their botched IPL, or the fact their stock price is only a third of what it was initially offered at? Or that the resulting fallout is affecting the number of people signing up? Facebook is now considered "Grandma's Social App", and anyone who knows anything about how computers work won't use it because they know what a huge security hole it is. But as long as they abandon html5, everything will be fine.
