Look at it again. The parts breakdown at the bottom is for the 4,4S and 5. The 5 has the A6. 4 has A4 and the 4S A5.

Huh. Wow. Ok, so I've heard of this before. But excuse my ignorance. How do they get their stuff so cheap?

It's called "Wholesale Distributor Price" any corporation that has a license in their particular city in USA can obtain this license so long as they can prove they are a registered corporation with intent to sell merchandising.

Wrong. If you are a customer who is ordering parts at millions in quantity, you will get a huge price break comparing if you are only ordering 10, 100, or 1000 pieces. Distributor logic is for typical situation.

Hmm. I understand the bulk buying thing but the price for these parts are dirt cheap; ridiculously cheap. Anyways.

Add Administrative & Selling expenses then calculate the net profit.

True but what about software development, patents, apple retail store are all rented locations how much do you think Realestate in midtown manhattan costs property rental like that probably goes for about 1mil-2.5mil per month and the stores have to produce that out of the product sales, there's more to a business then just parts of a device if anything that's the most simplistic part of the business there are workers in all levels of the company that need be paid granted in sure apple takes a nice cut and they should for Gods sake wouldn't you I mean if anything what is a business for?

So say total cost is roughly $180 even $200 I don't see how overall there markup % is so high $600/700 retail with out contract but can offer it to customers at 1/3 of that price with a 2 yr contact .. They claim they don't make money off the phone it's the long term contract @ $100 a month for 2yrs can we say ... $2400 give or take on a cell phone ??? When I see to make a product over in china witch cost $180 and to sell for $700 is a good enough profit never the less there's gonna be a new one before you hit your one year mark under contract .,

the simple reason for the price is that every company spends a lot of money in advertisement, marketing, research and development etc. its not just apple who is charging you..its basically every company whether its a mobile phone or whatever product you are buying..

Are Display and touch screen separate? I thought touch layer is integrated on the iPhone 5? Display should be the most expensive part and it surely cost more than $8. This article doesn't make any sense.
Haha!

other variable costs, overheads, fixed costs, goodwill... and so on! what about that?

jMa - September 14, 2012 at 4:49pm
All of that may be relevant, but it is not part of the Bill of MATERIALS.

so the customer's cost should be based on the BILL OF MATERIALS only?!
