Phil Schiller, SVP of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, has responded to a customers concern about scratching on the iPhone 5, reports 9to5Mac.
Here's the email exchange:

Good day Sir,
I love my Black & Slate iPhone 5, but I've been seeing some scuffs, scratches and marks throughout the band around the phone along with many others. What should we all do? Any plans to fix this?
Thank you,
Alex

Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color.
That is normal.

You can check out some scratch tests here. Have you noticed scratching on your device? Would you call it normal?

If you bought a shirt with a hole in it, u need to exchange them. If you bought a blank paper that someone wrote something on it, you exchange them. If you bought a wedding ring that has scratch on it, you return them. If you bought an iphone that has scratch on back, you exchange them. Simple.

Invisible Shield by Zagg has always been my favorite product against scratches with no extra bulk. It been on my iPods, iPhones and iPads.
Highly recommend it.

If someone doesnt know that the actual price of the iphone is way lower than the selling price is just ignorant . Its normal for Apple, thats the way they made all those billions.Just ask those ppl at Foxxcon how much they make,or those that actually make those painted aluminum cases . They should have a polycarbonate case/back cover, just like the 920,thats scratch proof (more or less, since its colored all the way inside )

You are a fucking idiot. First the iPhone 5's case is not painted. It's anodized. Second, calling polycarbonate scratch proof is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You need to check your facts before posting some bullshit. Or go work for FOX.

All I have to say is would you buy a Ferrari with scuff marks already on it? I love my iphone 5 because its the fastest phone but had to go through 3 of them at the apple store to find one that didn't have as bad of a scuff mark as the others did. I think the only way to fix this issue at this point is to offer free cases to everyone.

iPhone 5 had type 2 anodizing. While much better than type 1, it is still prone to scratching and chipping. It is also probe to fading from prolonged exposure to the sun (the black version that is)
Apple could and should have done type 3 anodizing (AKA hard anodizing) hard anodizing would have been ok for the black version. But the white version would be the deal breaker. You can do clear anodizing in type 1 and type 2 and have the aluminum come out silver color. But if you do clear type 3 anodizing, the aluminum comes out a greenish color.
