AT&T May Be Extending FaceTime Over Cellular to More Customers?

Posted November 21, 2012 at 4:54pm by iClarified
Numerous reports suggest that AT&T maybe extending FaceTime over cellular to more customers than previously expected.

MacRumors forum members have been noticing the change. For example, user kre62 says:

---
In a recent thread we were discussing AT&T members getting facetime with LTE devices and tiered plans. However I noticed today that I have facetime over cellular and I have an unlimited plan on my 5.

I just turned off my other phone, a 4S and turned it back on, only to find the switch flipped to ON for facetime over cellular. Both phones work perfectly over cellular. I also checked a few coworkers phones, all now have FT over cellular.
---

The change has been noticed by other users especially those with the iPhone 5 and an unlimited data plan; however, there has been positive responses from users with the iPhone 4S as well.

AT&T recently announced that it would expand FaceTime over Cellular at no extra charge for iOS 6 customers with an LTE device on any tiered data plan after intense criticism over its previous decision to make the feature only available to those on Mobile Share plans.

Argh! Try this again. When my phone connected to cellular network it would turn FaceTime over cellular off (after being on the network roughly 30 seconds). I tried a hard reboot with same result. As far as I can tell just because it says on right after a reboot doesn't mean it'll stay on if it does stay on then I'm jealous!!

After reading the comments I thought I would give this a try. I have the 4S running 6.0.1. I restarted my phone and yes, FaceTime over cellular was turned on. But as I sat there and watched my phone, FaceTime over cellular shut itself off when I was on the AT

Facebreak works thru Cydia. We've been using FaceTime over cellular for a couple years. It's worked on an iPhone 4 and 4S for me-perfectly! For now you can only have it thru IOS 5.1.1, but that will change soon.....

Is anyone resetting the network settings to accomplish getting this to work? On our iPhone 5 and 4S, still no dice on 6.0.1 Northern California...

Nope don't need to. I'm in southern CA and just went to setting and FaceTime and try to switch on which will tell u to call carrier. And did a hard reset where u hold home and power button and keep holding till screen go black and keep holding until you see white apple logo and than let go both button and wait for it to turn on. Than go back to FaceTime setting and you should see it "ON" already. Good luck

I have unlimited on iPhone 5. Facetime was working earlier today over LTE. Now it's disabled.

So I rebooted my iPhone 5 and now the option is disabled. Guess I wait for the rollout, too.

I have a gradfathered unlimited plan as well and I'm on iOS 6 in my iPhone 5. Sure enough "Use Cellular Data" is On. It's off on our iPhone 4S but I'm updating it now to 6.0.1 to see if that enables the option or not. It also has an unlimited plan. One less reason to jailbreak! (When it's available!)

After upgrading our 4S to 6.0.1 the option still isn't available. I called AT&T and there isn't any troubleshooting to verify why yet as they haven't officially announced FaceTime over cellular on non family shared data plans. I'll keep watching out though on the 4S!

AT&T need to make FaceTime over cellular feature free for unlimited data users with out changing their plan.. Sprint offers the feature ( FaceTime ) for their customers ( free ) no hidden charges... Come on AT&T let's value ur customers .. Don't think about how much u going make over ur customers ..

My iPhone 5 with firmware 6.0.1 and grandfathered unlimited plan suddenly was able to do FaceTime over cellular about 2 weeks ago.
