Microsoft to Release 'Xbox TV' Device to Compete With Apple TV?

Microsoft is planning to release an 'Xbox TV' device that would compete with the Apple TV, reports The Verge.

We're told that the set-top box is part of a two-SKU strategy for Microsoft's next-generation of Xbox hardware that will be unveiled in 2013, with a release date ahead of the holiday shopping season. The device will run on the core components of Windows 8 and support casual gaming titles rather than full Xbox games typically found on a dedicated console. Although hardware specifications aren't fully locked down, we understand Microsoft will use a chipset to enable an "always on" device that boots quickly and resumes to provide near-instant access to TV and entertainment services.

When asked for comment, Microsoft made the following statement:

"Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention."

Analysts expect Apple to update its Apple TV device in March of 2013 and perhaps release an Apple Television by the end of 2013.

Perfect. I can't wait. What PCs have been able to do for years and same with the Xbox, they are now taking that same technology and bringing a simpler smaller design. For the guy that says 'whatever Apple does Microsoft will follow' doesn't know their technology. The technology in AppleTV has existed years ago. Metaphorically speaking, you're giving credit to a MiniCooper for making such a smaller car like they invented the car when cars have existed for so many years. I can understand now why Apple doesn't care about the Apple TV. There's nothing miraculous about it. I got it as a gift and to be honest, for the most part I find it useless. Just my opinion.

MS is competing with Apple on all fronts, first with the surface vs. the clear winner in the tablet market, and again here for a product that Apple doesn't care about, and that it doesn't actually make any money on. Whoever comes up with these strategies?
