Bell and Virgin Mobile to Unlock Off Contract iPhones for a Fee

Bell and Virgin Mobile to Unlock Off Contract iPhones for a Fee

Posted November 27, 2012 at 12:20am by iClarified
According to leaked internal documents, Bell and Virgin Mobile will start unlocking off contract iPhones starting today, reports MobileSyrup. Unfortunately, the unlocking service comes at a ridiculous fee of $75.

First, this will be “launched in phased approach” and to have your iPhone unlocked via Bell or Virgin you’ll need to fork over $75. This can only be accomplished by calling Bell’s Credit & Prevention or via Virgin Care.

Criteria for Unlock:
- Must own iPhone outright (all models supported, Bell and Virgin)
- Must not be on contract
- Must be a post-paid Virgin Mobile or Bell Mobility customer
- $75 onetime payment via Credit Card

The site also notes that as part of "the next Phase in 2013" the carriers will look to "expand the eligibility guidelines."

Telus does this for $50 too. Why they even charge when it's off contract is beyond me. I have a 3GS 2 months off contract (3yr) and its barely even worth the unlock fee. Quite the scam Canadian providers are running, with 3 yr contracts and charging a ridiculous unlock fee even after you own it outright.

T-Mobile Austria also charges 50 Euros! But only after the contract (24 months) is over. I think Apple has the power stop this, and really should do so...

So really, if you plan on unlocking it at the end of your contract anyway, it's gonna cost you $50 more. Might as well buy it unlocked from Apple from the start. These companies piss me off.
