MTA Releases App and Data Feed for NYC Subway Arrival Times

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced the release of an iPhone app and data feed that provides real-time arrival information for New York City subway trains.

The app, called MTA Subway Time, covers the 156 stations of the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 subway lines and the S 42nd Street Shuttle. At these stations, the MTA has installed countdown clocks that provide arrival estimates in minutes for upcoming trains. The app joins MTA Bus Time, Metro-North Train Time, LIRR Train Time, and MTA Bridges and Tunnels' Travel Time in the MTAs expanding list of real-time data tools for customers.

“Today is the day that generations of dreamers and futurists have waited for,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Joseph J. Lhota. “The ability to get subway arrival time at street level is here. The days of rushing to a subway station only to find yourself waiting motionless in a state of uncertainty are coming to an end. Now, you can know from the comfort of your home or office whether to hasten to the station, or grab a cup of coffee as part of a leisurely walk.”

You can download MTA Subway Time from the App Store for free. A desktop version is available at http://apps.mta.info/traintime/. A live stream of arrival time data is available to third party developers who want to build their own apps using the data.

How should „real-time arrival” work in a subway system without reception?

Exactly!!! You'd think New York City would update their subway system to have 4g available or even wi-fi for a small fee. It's not really real time.

Check before getting into the station.

When I’m heading to work I’m going for the first train I can get and when I’m drunk in a late night I take what I can get as well. But when I have to switch trains for one station on the G I would like to check if I get one within a few minutes or if it’s smarter just to walk a few blocks. In Berlin there is reception even while one is riding the train;)
