Tim Cook on the Possibility of an iPhone With a Larger Display

Posted January 24, 2013 at 12:05am by iClarified
During Apple's earnings call today, CEO Tim Cook answered a question about the possibility of the company releasing an iPhone with a larger display.

Goldman Sacks analyst Bill Shope ask Cook the following question:

Many of your smartphone competitors are now focused on differentiating themselves with larger screen sizes than that of the iPhone 5 and your predecessor product. How do you think about the competitive dynamics of the market right now in that respect. Do you think that's a valid point of differentiation and do you think that there is a long term case for a larger screen size or at least a larger variety of screen sizes for iPhones and the smartphone category in general.

Apple CEO Tim Cook replied:

Bill, It's Tim. The iPhone 5 offers as you know a new 4-inch Retina display which is the most advanced display in the industry. No one comes close to matching the level of quality in the Retina display. It also provides a larger screen size for iPhone customers without sacrificing the one handed ease of use that our customers love. We put a lot of thinking into screen size and believe me, we picked the right one.

Do you think Cook is just trying to throw everyone off track or is Apple really sticking to just a 4-inch display?

If you jumped from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5 screen size why the bug resistance to go larger This could be the reason competitors keep chipping away at iPhones market share. I see my co-workers android and Windowa 8 phones and I am intriged.

Apple very carefully thought out the original screen size. So that the average female could use the phone fully holding it with just one hand. People too easily forget this is actually an important design benchmark. Those same critics also forget that androids' larger screen size originally was not a feature but rather their software's lack of capability to render on a smaller screen. Clever marketing fixed that. Obligatory slap at android: who "bumps" phones? No one, ever. That's who.

Bump is almost as useless feature as FaceTime. I'm an iPhone user and I use it few times.

Guess things are boring in Droid land . The kiddies are out in force. If you had any maturity you'd read behind the spin. Like the masters of spin, the politicians, he avoided answering the question. All he said was that the existing phone is the best they have now. Doh its what they have now, and the questioner asked would they do a 5" screen. He never said anything relating to a 5" screen. "believe me we picked the right one". For what reason? It was available in numbers so we'd have no supply constraints. , iI meant we didn't have to rely on Samsung? It uses the right power? The list is endless and without detailed elaboration of why it was right, which he never gave. Reading is not just words, its understanding whats been written (Said), or often more importantly what wasn't said.

I understand and feel your concerns, seriously, and not that I'm going to bash your statement, but the size of iPhone 5 display hasn't come to the reasonable size yet. When I see people, they do more stuff than just watching video with their phone, they browse web content and if necessary, they text a lot and I believe that's part of reason why we use phone, texting/placing a call, But if you do group texting in landscape mode it is impossible for me to see the preview of the text, if you do it with portrait mode, you still be able to see two to three more balloons, and I believe the size of keyboard on iOS is quiet pleseant and doesn't look too circumcised, but when you text it with landscape mode, I think it is ridiculous whomever was user interface designer, but made it this look horrible and haven't been changed since 2007, and I don't think it will resolve the issue even if they made it into 4.8.. I know it sounds like more of operating system's problem, but when you browse web content wit its size of display, I wouldn't say it is pleseant to use, and I have good eye sights, but I still found 4' with an extra row is still considered to be small.. I don't really like if the phone comes with more than 5 inch, 4.8 inch however, doesn't look tacky or horrible if Apple could ditch home button eventually, which still looks fits in a pocket and easy to carry around..

oh 'ye agree!..the bigger the display the better. Tim's on the right track, it works on Galaxy why not in iPhone. we'll see how after sales profitability demands with the bigger display.

Tim. You promised the most advanced OS in the market...IOS 6 with an amazing map... Where the hell is it???? Where's the update??? Now what? Stop innovating! If that's what you're trying to do.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have any issues with iOS but perhaps Apple should focus on updating the iOS, an update that would just blow all the competitors out of the water. Screen size is screen size. Who cares.

Go back to the smaller screen! Bigger is not better! Stop chasing competitors and be innovative. Oh by the way fix the back....can't buy another iPhone till the design is fixed.

Can I sue apple inc for being douch bags? I mean, every freaking six months there's a new iPhone! What next? iPhone shoved in your eye? Someone remember the "Futurama" episode when mom was selling real "EYE" phones?

they would have to watch out for a 4.8 inch iPhone to cannibalize their own products such as the iPad Mini or the iPad. If people had a big iPhone, they wouldn't have an iPhone and an iPad. Less products for Apple to sell.

DavidG - January 24, 2013 at 4:44am
That's not true. An iPhone is still an iPhone and the iPad is not the same.

I doubt it. Apple recently increased there screen size to 4". All the apps in the App Store had to be updated to fit the screen size. If apple can make there 4.8" in a 16:9 ratio,it'll probably work out. Even if they do that, they will have to have their apps to work on the iphone 5 with the increased size and have there apps work on the " bigger screen".

I care more about the Jailbreak. I want to jailbreak my devices when I buy them not wait for 6 months to enjoy my tweaks. I dont care about the larger screen. If I want to wash a movie I have my 70" TV
