Tim Cook Rallies the Troops at Town Hall Meeting

Posted January 27, 2013 at 5:55pm by iClarified
Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke to company employees at a Town Hall meeting on Friday discussing earnings, the competition, and their future, reports 9to5Mac.

Cook was quick to dismiss the drop in Apple's stock value. “we [Apple] just had the best quarter of any technology company ever.” Cook said. “the only companies that report better quarters pump oil. I do not know about you all, but I do not want to work for those companies.” He also reemphasized that share price is not Apple's goal; rather, making new products that customers love is the priority.

Cook also announced an expansion of the Employee Purchase Plan which starting Monday will allow Apple employees to purchase unlocked iPhones at a discount. He also noted that the constrained iMacs and iPad minis would soon be available to employees at a discount. The search for a new retail chief is still ongoing with Cook currently acting as the top manager for the time being.

The competition was also addressed. Cook noted that while Android has more market share there is still a problem with fragmentation. In addition, iOS users love and use their devices more than Android owners. Cook mentioned that iOS devices were used to purchase more items on Black Friday than Android devices. The Apple CEO stressed that Apple was about experience, top hardware, software quality, and actual usage by customers; rather than marketshare.

Actually Apple sells unlocked phones to anyone willing. It's the carriers (ATT, Sprint, Verizon) that don't want people to unlock because they technically paid for more than half of the cost of the phone (they cost 650 unlocked or you can buy one from one of the carriers for 200 and the carrier covers the rest of the costs) as long as you sign up to a 2 year contract. After the 2 years are up you become full owner and can get it unlocked from them and leave that carrier since your contract is up.

Well their problem is that Android (besides security & fragmentation issues) is a great OS. It can perform all of the basic needs that iOS can do. I'm not a fan of Android (with the exception of Android x-86) but it does pose a considerable threat against Apple. If I were Apple I'd take this new year and revamp a couple things such as: iOS, the iPhone, and OS X.
