Google Announces Chromebook Pixel With Touch 'Retina' Display [Video]

Google has announced the Chromebook Pixel, a new laptop with a higher pixel density the Retina Display MacBook Pro.

This Chromebook has the highest pixel density (239 pixels per inch) of any laptop screen on the market today. Packed with 4.3 million pixels, the display offers sharp text, vivid colors and extra-wide viewing angles. With a screen this rich and engaging, you want to reach out and touch it—so we added touch for a more immersive experience. Touch makes it simple and intuitive to do things like organize tabs, swipe through apps and edit photos with the tip of your finger.

The Pixel has been engineered with the highest quality components to ensure it’s comfortable to use all day long and meets the needs of demanding power users. The body of the Pixel is made from an anodized aluminum alloy to create a smooth and durable surface; vents are hidden, screws are invisible and the stereo speakers are seamlessly tucked away beneath the backlit keyboard. The touchpad is made from etched glass, analyzed and honed using a laser microscope to ensure precise navigation. The Pixel also has powerful, full-range speakers for crisp sound, a 720p webcam for clear video, and a total of three microphones designed to cancel out surrounding noise.

Features:
● Speed: Speed has been a core tenet of Chrome and Chromebooks since the beginning. For Pixel, it’s critical that the overall experience, everything from loading webpages to switching between apps, is near instant. Powered by an Intel® Core™ i5 Processor and a solid state Flash memory architecture, the Pixel performs remarkably fast.

● Connectivity: The Pixel has an industry-leading WiFi range thanks to carefully positioned antennas and dual-band support. Long-term evolution (LTE) is engineered directly into the machine, delivering fast connectivity across Verizon's network, the largest, fastest 4G LTE network in the U.S. (LTE model optional). It also comes with 12 free GoGo Inflight Internet passes for those times you need to connect while in the air.

● Storage: Since this Chromebook is for people who live in the cloud, one terabyte of Google Drive cloud storage* is included with the Pixel. This enables you to save, access and share photos, videos, documents, and all of your stuff from all of your devices, from anywhere.

The Pixel will be available for purchase starting today on Google Play in the U.S. and U.K., and soon on BestBuy.com. The WiFi version ($1,299 U.S. and £1,049 U.K.) will start shipping next week and the LTE version ($1,449) will ship in the U.S. in April.

If this thing ends up with good hardware I'll buy instead of the MacBook Pro I was going to because it probably be three times cheaper than what Apple sells and better more than likely and I'll just install Mac OS X on it so I can develop on X code

I will only be surprised by the level of copying of the Macbook Pro IF the hardware company that made it ISN'T Shamesung.

essentially we were... TRYING (lol) to make the hardware INVISIBLE --- iPAD does that far better... people don't need to WAIT to have the URGE to touch... its just how it was designed to work in the first place.

Same key reasons that Apple has been promoting for over 20 years... Apple inspires the entire industry right down to the very point on how to present and sell.

32gig storage, no OS, no real use except browsing and playing games. And $1200. Haha

And to get more storage you have to buy the 64 gb model which has LTE. It more than likely will carry a data contract that you'd probably blow through in no time. You can't just get a wifi version. And Just think. If people looking at these were smart, For $50 more you can get the 13 inch retina MacBook pro. Which offers so many more specs, more speed, storage and capabilitys. And a real OS. And if you really want the google chrome experience or interface you can just download it for free. It's the exact same that's in the chromebook.

Ha ha you make an excellent argument. Just tell people the Macbook air will do them well and the free chromebook software runs on Apple already if this interests them.

Looks like an Apple commercial....lol

Apple should start making commercials like the old "everyone wants to be like Mike" Nike commercials. "everyone wants to be like apple". I do agree that other companies coming out with Better displays is creating competition. Which will make apple come out with even better ones down the line.

Even the video is an Apple rip off. Im sticking with the Real Thing. Hey apple should run some of those old Coca Cola commercials and insert their name.

That is a MacBook Pro made by Google :-)
Nitro Junkie
Nitro Junkie - February 22, 2013 at 12:34am
It's far from a Pro. It doesn't really have a real OS. It's basically a browser that runs apps.

And to say that they started working on this 2 years ago is crap. Ya they really started working on it before the retina MacBook pro came out. When the retina MacBook came out they probably said let's copy it and ad a few more pixels and say we created the best screen ever. They do nothing but copy and cash in.

How are they copying off of apple? By making a better screen? That's competition..

Nitro Junkie - February 21, 2013 at 10:21pm
19 pixels more. oh my. No way you'll be able to tell the difference. I bet the MacBook still looks better. All because the apple software and real OS. And like I said. That's all they did is copy what apple did first, add 19 pixels more per inch so they can say they have a better screen. Competition and companies copying off apple is good in a way because apple will end up just coming out with better products.

mavrik101 - February 22, 2013 at 2:26pm
Are you implying this unseen / unproven / unsold / unknown / unbranded retina screen that is 19 pixels bigger is BETTER?

Very impressive screen an design, but 1200 bucks for a dumbed down browser-based os? Thank you but I'll pass.
Nitro Junkie
Nitro Junkie - February 21, 2013 at 9:25pm
Was thinking the same thing. They're just copying and trying to cash in on Apples success. Why pay that price for a dumbed down browser OS when you can spend $200-300 more, get more storage space, a bigger screen, and a REAL Operating system, which will run the chrome BROWSER.
