Google has released Google Maps 1.1 for iPhone which brings the ability to search your Google Contacts and search for local places by selecting popular categories.

What's New In This Version: * Search your Google Contacts; sign in to have your saved addresses show up when you search for friends and family by name. * Quickly search for local places by selecting popular categories such as restaurants, bars, cafes, gas stations, etc. * Choose between Kilometers or Miles for your preferred distance units. * Note that some features may not be available in all countries.

is it possible to access street view in random places? i mean, beside the commercial places that are found by searches.
As long the street view pictures are available, of course.
Yeah same as the old Google maps app that was built into the iOS. Just put your finger down anywhere on the map preferably in satellite or normal mode on top of someone's house or building and you'll get that address location and if available Street view of that area!
