iPhone 5S to Feature Fingerprint Scanner and NFC?

Posted March 11, 2013 at 7:02pm by iClarified
A new report from the China Times claims the iPhone 5S will feature a fingerprint scanner and NFC capabilities. Apple is said to have selected Chipbond as the supplier for the required components; as well as for the device's touch display driver.

Rumors of a fingerprint scanner have been popular of late with KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also predicting last week that the iPhone 5S would offer the feature. The basis behind this prediction is Apple's acquisition of AuthenTec, a provider of mobile and network security solutions, last July.

The NFC rumor has popped up numerous times over the past few years; however, last September Apple SVP Phil Schiller didn't sound promising when speaking about the possibility. It's not clear that NFC is the solution to any current problem, Schiller said. "Passbook does the kinds of things customers need today."

Foxconn has reportedly started production of the iPhone 5S on the same line as the iPhone 5 which suggests minimal changes to the device.

I want NFC it would cost about 6¢ to add & it could open doors buy things from machines adjust your lights & temp in your house, there is a lot of things nobody's even thought of yet! & nobody's going to put the machines in stores until phones carry it! I want a bigger screen they really need to have two versions of the phone, Big screen Small screen I use the mine for the Net a lot more then I use it for the phone!

The iPhone will NEVER EVER EVER EVER have NFC. PLEASE stop writing articles about NFC as Apple has stated time and time again they are NOT going to include this as a "feature" on iPhones!

Who...cares? I'm with Phil Schiller and I'm also not impressed by NFC. Take the Samsung's Galaxys for example and their main advertised "bump" feature where two Galaxys can instantly transfer pictures or whatever simply doesn't impress me, nor would I use the feature if given the chance. Of course, if NFC checkout hardware suddenly appeared in all the stores, then I'd jump right on this bandwagon, but I haven't seen any evidence to that effect. And what's with the fingerprint sensor??? I always enjoyed the quick swipe access thanks to the fingerprint reader in my ThinkPad's, before I switched to MacBook Pro's. (a lot of them were actually provided by AuthenTec) Yes, it would be cool to not have to put in a passcode all the time, but again...I don't know if this is compelling enough. Fact remains for me as to whether or not I'll upgrade to the 5S (from my 5) is iOS 7. My tricked-out iPhone 5, thanks to the highly matured tweaks, hacks, and apps from the Cydia jailbreak store, will be hard to beat and I also won't be that impressed by a faster chip. The A6 (and A6X in the iPad 4) are screaming fast and they were well worth the upgrade from the A5 and A5X processors in the iPhone 4S and iPad 3. Faster is always better, of course, but for the first time, there's no faster 3G or 4G to be had and for the first time, the A6/X chips are "fast enough" for me not to care as much about a faster device, unless iOS 7 blows iOS 6 + jailbreak out of the water...hmmm...
