ABC is Developing an App for Live Streaming TV

ABC is Developing an App for Live Streaming TV

Posted March 19, 2013 at 7:53pm by iClarified
ABC is working on an app that will be able to live stream television to cable subscribers, reports the New York Times.

The app will live stream ABC programming to the phones and tablets of cable and satellite subscribers, allowing those subscribers to watch “Good Morning America” on a tablet while standing in line at Starbucks, for instance, or watch “Nashville” on a smartphone while riding a bus home from work. The app could become available to some subscribers this year, according to people briefed on the project, who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about it publicly.

ABC has already begun talking with stations about how to include them in the app. Executives at other networks are said to regard the plan with a 'mixture of awe and fear'. ABC was first to sell TV episodes via iTunes and to stream episodes on its website. It's said to the further along in its live streaming plan than any other broadcaster.

As seen in the screenshots below, an ABC Player app is available from the App Store for free; however, it does not live stream TV.

I am sure I will try this app when it comes out, but I hope it has some killer features to differentiate it from all of the other network apps. It seems like every channel has an app now, and with over 250 channels, that’s a little ridiculous. How about one app for every live TV channel, and can we include DVR recordings too? That’s what I have with my DISH Anywhere app; I can stream whatever I want almost anywhere I go. That comes in surprisingly handy. I went to the DMV last week, and it took a few hours, but I really didn’t mind because I had a few movies to occupy my time.

Actually the laws of the United States of America. - states that basic television channels are suppose to be free and that no broadcasting agencies are allowed to charge for basic television. Yes people this is actually a law in the USA. But the broadcasters finds loopholes to bypass this law and we the people keep paying for basic television that is suppose to be free by law. - the reasons of these laws are because, the government says that all citizens of the United States must have a form of emergency notice when the government broadcast such emergencies to the public. - channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 are suppose be available at no cost what so ever to the public. But broadcasting companies finds ways around this law, specially now that antenna TVs are no longer available. So now broadcasting companies are forcing people to pay for public tv in every which way possible bypassing the laws, along with their packages when they are not suppose to.... It's the USA law...

I'm a subscriber to cheap low channels and Internet use but I have a high definition TV so I pay for HD service and the Internet So to me to get this ABC for free saves me from buying a small TV for another room where my MacBook is ! I'm using now Aereo for 1 Hour they give free per day to have my coffee and watch on my iPad at the same time, What is free like you say is only non HDTV stations and would be blurry to me, But this is a good point for everyone to know ! Thanks
