Apple has filed a patent for hybrid notebook/tablet whose display can be removed from the base containing the keyboard, reports Patently Apple.
"The patent filing includes details of a very cool display with a retractable magnetic mechanism that hides itself once detached from the MacBook's main body. Today, on paper at least, Apple has finally revealed their first patent filing about a hybrid notebook-tablet with actual details. "
Examples of embodiments described herein may take the form of a computer including a base and a display selectively removable from the base. The base includes a processor, a base wireless chip, and a power source. The display includes a screen for displaying a video output, a display wireless chip in communication with the base wireless chip, and a power wireless chip in communication with the power source. The base wireless chip transmits data from the processor to the display. Also, when the display is at least in one position with respect to the base, the power source transmits power to the power transmitting member of the display.

But the first part of the story starts with Xerox, otherwise, if Apple hadnt copied them after their first Macs theyd be in the dumps. For the iPad, well MS released the tablet computer in 2004. It went unnoticed.
Now just tell me which source tells you that apple stole it from xerox? They made deal and it sold out that's it. Im sure you have no idea what the stealing means. What the stealing mean is when there was no deals made, some unethical goofballs trying to take it away from its owner by applying forces and lots of irrelevant excuses. Also I do understand that this differs slightly from the Asus and Microsoft versions but its pretty much the same thing. We all know apple will sue microsoft for being to similar to their patent.

Wow, I'm reading this from a Surface Pro, so does Microsoft have to start paying royalties to Apple? It seems that MS should already have the patent on this.
iPad Pro -- osx running on a iPad that is more like a Macbook air -- the transition was naturally understood - something apple would take on far before windows and intel came out with a touch screen laptop --- the other companies guessed right -- but did they patent their IP?
the Macbook air technologies, do lead apple in a direction for an iPad pro, the convergence or merging of iOS and OSx have been in the talks far before windows 8 and the surface... multitouch mighty mouse and track pads with gestures were first on apple... yet other companies have offered more than apple has --- i still feel apple own this rightfully and will do a better job than microsoft has on the touch gesturization of osx
Another cool idea would be to have a dual boot option for the ipad. When on its own it boots ios and on docking with the base unit it would go into OSX.
What about the Transformer or the many other computers out like this? including the HP one that they have an ad campaign out for? How can they get a patent for something that is already out?
Exactly.. It seems they may have the patent office in their pockets. They've been granted patens for existing technology and for BS, some of which are now being reviewed and deemed invalid.

I agree, there are "similarities" with this and the surface. However, if you non believers would read and actually understand what you are reading, you would see that the Microsoft surface is a TABLET with a removable keyboard.
Apple's patent is for a MacBook with a removable screen.. Remember MacBooks, those things that apple has crunched the competition with....?? So please, read and COMPLETLY understand what you are reading before making stupid comments.....
If Apple wanted to Copy the surface, the iPad WOULD BE SOLD WITH A REMOVABLE KEYBOARD... K kids??
