Apple Says Google Now and Samsung Galaxy S4 Infringe On Its Patents

Posted May 22, 2013 at 5:33pm by iClarified
Apple has added the Samsung Galaxy S4 to its lawsuit against Samsung and is also alleging that Google Now violates its patents, according to a FOSS Patents report.

Apple filed a motion specifying five patents that are allegedly infringed on by the S4 and two patents that are allegedly infringed on by the Google Now app.

Here's the patents that Apple references:

● Two "Siri" patents on unified search: U.S. Patent No. 8,086,604 and U.S. Patent No. 6,847,959 on a "universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system"

● U.S. Patent No. 5,666,502 on a "graphical user interface using historical lists with field classes"

● U.S. Patent No. 5,946,647 on a "system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data" (which I dubbed the "data tapping" patent, a term many reporters have since adopted)

● U.S. Patent No. 7,761,414 on "asynchronous data synchronization amongst devices"

Originally Apple asserted patents '604 and '959 against the Android Quick Search Box but it is now updating its infringement contentions to apply to the newly released Google Now.

Samsung has smaller versions (Galaxy S3/S4 Mini) and some other variations that may interest you, although I'm not sure which carriers will sport them. They may still be too big for you though, not sure.

Even their lawsuits are getting stale. Please innovate, Apple.

Wow, that's actually funny. All Apple does is sue, they're grasping at strays trying to get a monopoly on the Smartphone industry. They should just stop, breathe, and focus on creating better phones. If Apple put as much into R&D as they do into researching their patents and filing lawsuits, they'd be the #1 brand in the world. Oh well, as long as they're focussed on being petty, they'll always be stuck where they are.

What would you say Apple's most innovative year was? Because if you are looking at strictly the R&D budget to determine how innovative a company is, then 2013 should be the most innovative the company has ever been. With their R&D budget nearly exceeding $4 billion (back in 05 it was only $500 million) it's obvious that they are in fact researching new innovative ideas. Patents are set up to help companies get value out of their research and development, but if other companies violate those patents, the patents become less valuable and therefore the incentive to innovate is minimized. Since Apple is widely regarded as the most powerful brand in the world (contrasting what you believe), I don't see why it is such a big deal that they are suing companies for violating the patents that will help them stay the most powerful.

Apple is and always has been a leader in their Create and innovative business and are a mile stone for many companies who have gained inspiration from Apple.. these companies in their quest to be like Apple do often in their design step across the line when making their products in their attempt to emulate Apples products that they admire so much and often infringe patents and think that its ok to do so ... As we all know the sole objective of Apple ( and any other company) registering their patents is to protect what they have worked hard, created and invested in. So lets not blame Apple or any other company for protecting their rights ...if we remember this we will not forget to give credit where credit is due !

Except that "universal" search has been around before iOS. Patenting doesn't mean it's something they invented. That patent should be invalidated. Besides... Apple steals as much as any other company out there.

It's called competition bud! If you cannot create innovative products than you will be overtaken! So I grow "Florida Natural" oranges but Samsung makes them better so THEY win!!! This has NOTHING to do with stealing ideas it has to do with the corrupt process of obtaining a patent and making that patent stand for what you think it means! Point Blank! Apple needs to design something that innovates then we can talk!

Maybe once you're out of business in the "Florida Natural" oranges market you can start growing "SweeTango" apples. Of course you could only sell them if you pay the University of Minnesota a licensing fee, because they spent the money developing the fruit and have the patents protecting other people from copying it or growing it without a license. One of the reasons why the University of Minnesota's "Honeycrisp" apple is regarded as one of the best apple varieties today (and one of the top 25 innovations that changed the world) is because it too had patent protection.

It's not hate, it's a business and Samsung likes to play the innocent in this war. They are nothing more than a bunch of copycats. Samsung is the one who should be innovating and put aside the habit of stealing intellectual property.
