Garmin In-Car HUD Projects Navigation Guidance On Windshield

Posted July 9, 2013 at 3:45pm by iClarified
Garmin has just announced an in-car head-up display. The portable HUD actually projects your navigation guidance on to your own windshield while you are driving.

The device sits on the dashboard where it beams navigation data upward into the driver's line of sight on to a transparent film or a reflective lens attached to the device (Both are included with the device).

The HUD automatically adjusts its brightness depending on the time of day, so that it remains visible even during directly sunlight and that it does not hurt your eyes at night. The unit also has an integrated USB port to keep your smartphone charged, but the heads up display aspect pairs to your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Garmin's HUD navigation data is powered by one of your smartphone's Garmin Navigation apps -- either Navigon or StreetPilot. In addition to basic turn by turn arrows, The HUD displays estimated time of arrival, graphic lane guidance, traffic delays, upcoming safety camera locations, excessive speed warnings, speed limit, current speed and distance to next turn.

●Projects navigation information onto your windshield
●Provides estimated time of arrival and Lane Assist
●Offers speed, traffic and safety camera alerts¹
●Works wirelessly with compatible Bluetooth®-enabled smartphones
●For use with Garmin StreetPilot® for iPhone® or NAVIGON mobile app

Garmin claims the HUD can increase safety and reduce driver distractions.

You can pick up the Garmin HUD for $129.99 this summer You will also need Garmin's StreetPilot or Navigon App ($29.99+).

Nice idea. One problem what happens when there is no cell phone tower out in the middle of the stick!

If you have an iphone, cell tower is (partially) irrelivant, as the GPS built into the phone still functions. Load a map on your phone, put it in airplane mode, and follow the blue dot that is you on the map. It does work. This projecting on the windshield is cool! It has been in the BMW for about 6 years now, but not as a portable device! Nice work Garmin!
