To solve this issue, these researchers combined tracking data from the participants phone as well as their friends. By correlating their location information with their friend's, the researchers came up with a way to guess the location.
Mirco Musolesi, Manlio Domenico, and Antonio Lima of the University of Birmingham won this year's Nokia Mobile Data Challenge for this algorithm.
