Android Reaches 80% of Smartphone Market While iOS Declines to 13%

In its recent report of market share by operating systems, IDC is reporting that iOS is losing ground to both Android and Windows Phone.

During Q2 2013, IDC says Apple saw a year over year decline dropping from 16.6% to 13.2% of the market share even though it shipped 31.2 million iPhones in 2Q13 compared to 26 million in 2Q12.

Despite beating Wall Street expectations in terms of shipment volumes, Apple's share in the worldwide smartphone operating system market posted a year-over-year decline during the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13). Meanwhile, Android and Windows Phone both managed slight increases during the same period. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 236.4 million smartphones in 2Q13, up 51.3% from the 156.2 million units shipped in 2Q12. Second quarter shipments grew 9.3% when compared to the 216.3 million units shipped in 1Q13.

"The iOS decline in the second quarter aligns with the cyclicality of iPhone," says Ramon Llamas, Research Manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team. "Without a new product launch since the debut of the iPhone 5 nearly a year ago, Apple’s market share was vulnerable to product launches from the competition. But with a new iPhone and revamped iOS coming out later this year, Apple is well-positioned to re-capture market share."

Androids share can be attributed to strong contributions from Samsungs and its Galaxy S4. Overall 236.4 million smartphones shipped this quarter, which is an increase of 51.3% over last year. However, with a next generation iPhone launching along with a rumored low-cost iPhone 5C, next quarter could be very different.

One word! Jailbreak! Or actually 2 words! Jailbreak < root. Many people moves to android because they are easy to root or you don't have to wait for long time. Like my iphone 5 is on 6.1.3 no jailbreak 3 months already, while galaxy s4 can be rooted already.

What's funny is apple really isn't losing anything here, companies struggling to produce as many android phones as possible, while apple puts out one phone a year. One phone vs. every other phone. Now the variety of android phones may ad up when you jumble everyone using an android phone together. But then people will look at the stats compared to "the iPhone" as in one phone by itself in it's own category. Tell me, which android phone on its own packs as much of a punch as the iPhone? Which single android, windows or other smartphone on its own outsells the iPhone? People see the stats and only see what they want to see, but the facts are there, but people don't look at those... Just sayin

First things first. Most products are made in China today. Just because a product is put together in China doesn't mean its bad quality. Second thing. iPhone (1 model) is compared to HUNDREDS of Android based phones. No any one phone can compete with iPhone.

The market share should mean one thing to general public -> percentage of all users your device is compatible with. Currently if you own an Android device, you will be able to share apps/pictures/music with 80% of the people that own a smartphone. Equivalence between Apple and quality is faulty at best. If you compare the quality of an iPhone with the quality of an Android device in the same price range (eg. Galaxy S4, HTC One, even Sony Xperia Z for the current generation) you will find that quality of the product is not at all lower than the "premium" that Apple sells (and charges).

Actually, don't even bother looking it up, you probably still won't understand, just wait until you get to high school, you will learn it there. In the meantime, please don't let your head explode! LOL!
