Apple iPhone 5 vs. Nokia Lumia 1020: Camera Comparison [Photos]

Posted August 10, 2013 at 6:32am by iClarified
Check out this comparison gallery of photos taken with the Apple iPhone 5 and the Nokia Lumia 1020.

The iPhone 5 features an 8-megapixel camera; whereas, the new Lumia 1020 features a 41-megapixel camera with six physical lenses.

iSource took the comparison photos seen here. The iPhone 5 is on the left and the Lumia 1020 is on the right. You can find a full description of the settings and more photos at the link below.

Of course, the Lumia 1020 performed better when it came to zoom and low light situations; however, its colors seem a bit over-saturated.

What do you think?

I think, who cares if it is a little "over saturated" ? In many instances, it makes the photo look better. Come on people...if you really think the iPhone is even in the same league, you're kidding yourselves. P.S. ... It really isn't fair that the hallway photos taken with the iPhone are perfectly straight, and the Nokia photos are slightly tilted, making folks believe, at first glance, something is off about the Nokia photos.

Wow, if you think that Nokia is just in it for the camera you have to do your homework. Nokia breaks out of the box BIGTIME when it comes to phone development. They made an EXPLOSIVELY powerful camera look sexy on a phone. I bought the 1020 for work after switching off of IPHONE and Galaxy in tandem and came up with the following reasons on how nokia is years ahead of the game: First, just look at the phone. Notice anything different? CORNERS. when is the last time you saw corners on a smart phone? The answer is never. Tie that into a sturdy slate casing and a pocket size smaller than the S4 without zoom, and boom, sexy. Next, the sure power of the phone. If you buy a 1020, you are basically getting a handheld windows tablet that can take better photos than your stand alone camera. With social media integration and photo editing on the spot, this phone is a professional in marketing, advertising, PR's dream. Not only that but the OS is snappy and your hotspot lasts for six hours. Finally, the OS itself. They made windows 8 work above industry standards, with a more powerful processor than is fathomable for phone technology. Speed baby, hot, nasty, badass speed. Sometimes brand loyalty just won't let people see the light. If you are between contracts and want to join a REAL innovative crowd, get on board with this phone.

1) Since any camera along with any photostitching app can render as a big a file as with any other camera........a big panorama file in an iphone is meaningless really. 2) I wouldn't brag so much about multitasking in an Iphone 5 with it's 1GB ram (which the Nokia 1020 has twice that with 2GB) . Then there is the Galaxy s4 with 2x everything the Iphone5 has.

Retina HD? Retina makes the photo better? I get the distinct feeling you don't know what a retina display is... Am I mistaken?

I don't think some of you realize.... There is a big difference in MP count over 13. I own both a Canon EOS 50D (15 mp) and a Nikon D3100 (14 Mp). The difference in quality in the two is astounding, despite being only a single Mp different. The Canon beats the Nikon in every aspect, except for video which it doesn't do. As for the "good luck uploading a 41 mp photo to Facebook".... That's not how it works. When you take a picture on the 1020, it takes TWO PHOTOS. A 5mp photo for sending/uploading, etc... And a 36mp photo for editing and detail. So no, you will not be sending a 41mp photo and will NOT be crashing the OS. iPhone 5 vs Lumia 1020... I have an Iphone 4, and I'm bored with it. My wife still loves hers but I am done with the iPhone. I can't do anything with it anymore. I used to remember to grab it before leaving the house because I used it all the time. Now, I don't carry with me half the time I'm out. I would rather use a friends phone than my own. I have two coworkers who have an android and a W8 phone. I like both of them more than my phone. I'm considering the W8 more, though, because it responds better than the Android. So, lay them all down and play with each one. And learn all the facts before you start bitching about things that you don't understand.

I am an iPhone user since the first generation and love the camera but hate the non-existent zoom capabilities and how the flash desaturates a photo. The lumia takes amazing photos and they don't seem over saturated they appear as if a polarizing filter is being used. Love it! I am very impressed by the zoom quality as well. I am iffy about switching never having used a windows iOS.

41 MP looks nice but is irrelevant. Only a marketing trick from Nokia to fool consumers into buying. Only a pro photographer would see the "true" difference between iPhone5 and Lumia... And I'm guessing RAW isn't part of the options. Nokia should focus on making real cameras, not phones.

RAW is included. Only way to access 41 MP photos is to export to computer.

I have the first iPhone and iPhone 5 both still working and in pristine condition thanks to Zagg covers I am not convinced to change to Nokia when the camera advantage is apparently minimal and my iPhones other advantages so far outweigh all other considerations - I'll stay in iPhone territory thanks!!

I am running out of space with 8MB camera pictures (not an iPhone at present) and not sure if I want so many more pixels for the "average" quality pictures that I take and see only a few times or more in my life. I doubt if anybody else wants to see them after I am gone! I will leave the high Mega Pixel cameras for the professionals and focus on what I need to have done - in a simple enough "integrated" manner. Here I believe that Windows OS may be competing with iOS - but not Android. Since I work independently, I have no BYOD issues!

Hmmm Looks like Nokia did their homework with the camera on this Lumia! The images are definitely better than the iPhone and I like the widescreen format. But is it enough to make me switch from the rock-solid iOS platform? My biggest problem is that my iPhones just don't give up! My iPhone 2 from early 2008 is still used every day & my iPhone 4 is showing the same resilience. That get's my respect.

Kicked ass? In some pics, the iPhone looks better, in others the Lumia. Certainly in no cases is there enough of a difference to pay more than 5 cents.

Out of any of these pics, where does the iPhone 5 take a better picture, they all look bad compared to the Lumina

are you blind? the last two definitely look better on the iphone - the next to last one isn't even close. the first two are arguably better on the iphone, as well: the lumia oversaturates like crazy (which is not a plus).

wow, i guess next time i'm with nokia lumia, is not over saturated, is normal for that camera, so your saying that your eyes is over saturated and over brightness and color, all the apple fan boy are not pretty openmind other stuff, iOS have a best stable operating system, but nothing new about it now, and android have most nicely customizable things going on and iOS kinda crashing sometimes. but in nokia have a better camera and pretty simple to use but again the problem is nokia store kinda suck... but again. i just wish there is one cellphone that have all the feature need, and i don't need very expensive brand name for this matter.. be practical and save money before you do go in POOR state or likewise america getting POORER and still you thinking about this buying apple product because is expensive.. damn that..

@NoNo hate Me, I think you're the fan boy here, I just want to ask you only one question, sorry need to quote your comment "i don't need very expensive brand name", Do you ever have an Apple product(s)? Nokia working hard time only to compete Apple iPhone Camera?, it made me laugh when they brought 41 MB with six physical lenses in the table compare to 8MB in iPhone.

Putting a 41MP sensor in a phone makes less sense than putting 1000 horsepower in a pinto.

James - August 10, 2013 at 4:01pm
You apparently don't understand that 41MP is marketing and megapixels are irrelevant. The real value of such high pixel density lies in oversampling for a higher quality image output at more manageable files sizes. But then again, I think they'd be better off with a much lower pixel density such as 8MP on the same sized sensor. Of course, no matter what, the size of the sensor allows it to crush the iPhone in low light.

Do you know that I just updated to 6.13 and now my battery lasts longer and my volume is very high now it is amazing because of all this bullshit about no JB. But... who needs a jail break now also I went on the app store site and I (free) downloaded fantastic tones . Who need JB now when appliance store gives the same apps as cydia.

The Nokia has the better camera. It is easier to desaturate a picture than to saturate one and make it look good after the fact. One place the Nokia shines is when the desired bit of the picture is further off and you just want that one bit. The clarity and size after cropping an item in a distance shot is where the Nokia will destroy any other phone camera. If I want the very best camera then I'll buy a stand-alone camera. The camera in my iPhone 5 is excellent but not the very best camera ever produced, and is certainly more than good enough. I have a Mac Pro and an iPad 3 and my iPhone is an extension and enhancement of the other two. Each of the three make the other two even better than when taken individually. That gets lost sometimes when comparing a single feature of a single device. Why is the Nokia phone not being compared to high-end stand-alone digital cameras instead?

I REALLY WISH that there was a mobile and an OS that shredded iPhone and iOS into pieces when it comes to the overal experience, so I could move on to it for the sake of variety and a fresh new experience. But just like with ANY Windows Phone or ANY Android flagship, they can front all they want all those fancy hardware bells and whistles, but they won't EVER beat the iPhone at OS level!!! I've have owned flagships from both OSs: A Windows Phone is close to iPhone's beauty of simplicity, but lacks in all those finer details that takes the iOS into a whole other level. Androids on the other hand has much more going on into its OS than any other player, but lacks in overal smoothness and stability, while STILL missing some of the basics (for ex. after all those eclaires, ginger breads, ice creams and jelly beans, there is STILL NO UNDO?!??!? Reaaaaaally??????).
