Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'We're Not in the Junk Business'

Posted September 19, 2013 at 3:05pm by iClarified
Apple CEO Tim Cook, Software Chief Craig Federighi, and Head of Design Jonathan Ive, discuss strategy, market share, and the new iPhones in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek.

The lengthy report is worth a full read but here are some highlights of the remarks made by Cook.

On Capturing Market Share:
“There’s always a large junk part of the market,” says Cook. “We’re not in the junk business.”
“There’s a segment of the market that really wants a product that does a lot for them, and I want to compete like crazy for those customers,” he says. “I’m not going to lose sleep over that other market, because it’s just not who we are. Fortunately, both of these markets are so big, and there’s so many people that care and want a great experience from their phone or their tablet, that Apple can have a really good business.”

On Releasing a Low-Cost iPhone:
“We never had an objective to sell a low-cost phone,” says Cook. “Our primary objective is to sell a great phone and provide a great experience, and we figured out a way to do it at a lower cost.”

On Microsoft's Acquisition of Nokia:
“Everybody is trying to adopt Apple’s strategy,” Cook says in regards to the acquisition. “We’re not looking for external validation of our strategy, but I think it does suggest that there’s a lot of copying, kind of, on the strategy and that people have recognized that importance.”

On Apple's Stock Price:
“Am I happy about that? No, I’m not,” Cook says. “You have to bring yourself back to, ‘Are you doing the right things?’ And so that’s what I focus on, instead of letting somebody else or a thing like the market define how I should feel.”

Look at the pictures the Lumia 1090 takes and stop talking. That blows any iPhone camera out of the water. No comparison. The s4 takes better pictures as well. Stop with the nonsense.

What's junk is making the same damn phone 2 years in a row. Would it have killed them to at least put a damn 12mplx camera?! Who gives a crap about bigger pixels?! That shit looks the same as the iPhone 5!

More pixels only help make the picture bigger a better lens makes the picture have better quality you don't know shit about cameras and think hey if they stuff 41 mp in it it has to be good no. Cheap lenses and a hundred pixels won't help.

Should I update to ios 7?

I would try to find someone that has already installed it first. Try it an then decide if you like it. There isn't any performance enhancement that I could see, so you might check into that. I wish I hadn't upgraded on my 4s. I hate this iOS.

Clearly they just went along and took things for granted when Steve was at the wheel, and now they don't have a clue what direction to take. The visual mess that is called iOS7 if proof of that, trying to fix something that wasn't broken to begin with. Instead of working things out with Forstall he took the easy way out and fire the guy that created iOS just after Steve passed away, clearly he didn't share Steve's vision for Apple. Maybe history will repeat itself at Apple in the form of Forstall coming back to Apple to take Cooks position, I hope it doesn't take a decade for the board/stakeholders to come to that conclusion.

Apple has a great business ... it's a sound but innovative business creating what the people in their market need, which is good business sense ... Giving people what they want doesn't work in the short term , but giving people what they need works very well over the long term and that's how I see Apple's successful business strategy working.
