Analyst: A Larger iPhone Will Become a Reality in 2014, iWatch Will Be More Than a Smartwatch

Cantor Fitzgerald’s Brian White says that Apple will finally launch an iPhone with a bigger screen in 2014, according to an investor note relayed by BGR.

“Our meeting with a tech supply chain vendor highlighted a bigger iPhone is in the works, and our contact expects a launch in the 2Q:14/3Q:14 time frame,” White wrote in a research note on Thursday morning. “Nearly a year ago, our research in Asia uncovered early stage work on a larger iPhone, and we indicated in our Apple initiation report dated 9/4/13 that ‘a larger screen size on the iPhone is possible in 2014 that could approach 5 inches.’ Given today’s meeting, we are confident that a larger iPhone (approximately five inches) will become a reality in 2014.”

White also believes that the iWatch will be much more than just a smartwatch.

“Our contact also discussed the ‘iWatch.’ Although thoughts around the ‘iWatch’ have been widely covered by the media, this potential device has yet to be launched, and the use case discussions have been rather rudimentary,” White wrote. “As an Apple supplier, our contact offered insight into the ‘iWatch’ and described this potential new device as much more than an extension of your iPhone but as a multi-purpose gateway in allowing consumers to control their home (i.e., heating/cooling, lights, audio, video, etc.). We found this discussion interesting as it opened our eyes to why the ‘iWatch’ has the potential to appeal to a much broader audience of consumers than just another mobile device.”

White has a Buy rating on AAPL with a 12-month price target of $777. His report corroborates a recent one from DisplaySearch that predicted Apple would release a 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch iPhone in 2014.

The point for me isn't size, exactly. I'd like to be able to browse the web more easily. The browser is the main non-app that has a struggle with the screen size. Could Apple pull some of their well-known UI magic to make their smaller phones just as usable somehow? And why *not* let the iPad Mini be a phone too? -- Owen

Because cellular iPads, that's why! It kills me to though, how some switch to android just for size!

OK, but I do sympathize with those wanting a screen large enough for the web. The current iPhones do not excel in that area. Retina does not, to me, help all that much. I confess to wanting the web .. HTML/CSS/JavaScript to unify desktops, laptops, tablets, phones. I find apps annoying and unnecessary in most cases .. web-apps will do just fine.

Uhh, 64-bit processors were used on desktops and pc's and are now built for iPhone to work like one but I don't see how larger screen makes it good enough for the web (unless you want more text to be seen and/or resolution).

I've compared them side-to-side, and the larger screens seem better for the web experience. Possibly I'm not using the somewhat odd tall aspect ratio correctly on the iPhone. I'll go back and check. But time and again, my friends have shown me web pages where size does matter. Do you find the taller phone, and iOS7, solves the browser problem? (my phone is the smaller 4S)

Yes because safari for all that power is uses compared to chrome, CPU performance and once again, 64 bit processors like computers run it!

If you do the math, the likely sizes are 4.8 and 5.5, it depends whether or not they go down the ipad route and space out the apps on home screen or keep them like they are now. They definitely should bring out a bigger iPhone, on 4.8 it would be another app taller and wider, and on 5.5 another 1 up and across. Hopefully it will pave the way for some amazing widgets that will boost iOS and make it even better than android

This comment section is a strange place. I came down here for the possibility of some additional insight. Seems that was pointless.

Can't satisfy EVERYONE: little men and ladies want 4", big boys want > 4.5" so why not make 4" and 4.7" just like what they did to iphone 5: 5c and 5s. That way, everybody will be happy and nobody will be bitching! It's no brainer decision!

So you want everyone to code their programs so that the graphics will be suitable for 4,634 different possible screen sizes? A simple "Hello World" program would be upwards of 30 GB. You sure wouldn't be able to fit many apps. This might work out kinda OK on the Android platform, where the fragmentation of OS's is such that every device needs its own version of the OS. It certainly wouldn't work very well within Apple's ecosystem.

Still playing the "this proves they're slow" game I see, it's being taller because of rumors and the fact competitors are forcing them to do it just because they are, it's also called improving before moving on to bigger things otherwise known ass "I hate the size but good os and faster everything though!

Exactly, just like iPad, just bet the name would come either for iPhone L for the bigger phone (stands for large) or iPhone m for the regular sized phone as iPhone mini!

What you guys are implying is actually true. If Apple does release an iPhone with a bigger screen, it will be for a reason and will actually make things better. Androids have a larger screen because with a half-baked beta OS, it is the only level where they can compete with Apple (great specs, crappy execution). Just look at the terrabytes of ram and million of cpu cores Android traditionally had compared to iPhones. Yet, iPhones always worked buttery smooth and waaaaaay faster.

Crappy execution? You are agreeing apple has way faster everything but you implied that?

i don't need a huge phone just something slightly larger to allow for easier typing and allow for better web browsing with an edge to edge screen a 4.7" like the HTC One would be PERFECT not too small, not too big :-)
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - October 10, 2013 at 9:20pm
But does your phone cover the entire screen when holding it with one hand? the old 4ss screen is what too small is, 4" is perfect and make iphone look tall as any other phone!

Apple guy I totally understand you but if and only IF i was forced to move to an Android device, the HTC One would have been my choice, I own a Cell phone/Lab Shop and I must admit that the HTC One is the best Android ever made, all metal beautiful design with good amount of memory and the stereo speakers best i ever heard, one on each side of the phone ( sound really really good and loud ) if it only had an Apple OS in it I would have taken one for my self but sadly it's still an Android so I'm sticking with Apple, can't guaranty but pretty sure always will!! Every day I get at least 4 Androids mostly Galaxy's but not only that stopped working because of a virus or who knows what to format, and maybe one iPhone to fix a broken screen or a home button, it's funny how Android people don't backup their devices until they come to me and get a blank formatted galaxy/Android and cry about it, after that they learn, and on the iPhone even if they didn't use the cloud for backup I can still back it up with iTunes if they also want me to upgrade or restore the phone broken screen or not, ( infect one of the services i give in my shop is keeping backups for customers that don't trust themselves with backing up and I do it free if they give me their devices for repair, if not its $50 and I already got over 500 backups of all devices ). But NO Operating System can beat Apples and yes Android is faster in copying Cydia tweaks then Apple but then again Apple take their time and do it the right way!!!

I really do like my iPhone, but have looked into android a lot more because i personally would like a 4.7-5 inch screen. If Apple releases that great. If not I may switch to the HTC one. NO disrespect to Samsung or anything, but not a huge fan of the galaxy.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - October 10, 2013 at 7:58pm
Not to mention how much time you waste due to performance and less feature for camera, has any other phone improved enough before increasing size, that's why iPhone is like this so it won't be all like "I like iPhone but hate the size" some would say!
