Google Maps Loses Millions of Users Following the Release of Apple Maps [Chart]

Posted November 11, 2013 at 7:12pm by iClarified
Over a year after the release of iOS 6, Apple Maps has taken a significant amount of users away from Google Maps, despite the availability of a Google Maps app for iOS, reports the Guardian.

Using data from ComScore, the Guardian notes that in September 2012 there was a total of 81.1 million users of Google Maps, out of 103.6 iPhone and Android users. A year later that number is down to 58.7 million, or 43% of iPhone and Android users. That's despite the user base growing to 136.7 million.

"For the average user, even if they have the Google Maps app, they don't use it a lot," said Andrew Lipsman, an analyst at ComScore. "In a narrow window [after the iOS app download became available] I'm sure there was a ton of activity, but only for a short period."

ComScore revealed that in September 2013, 35 million users made use of Apple Maps at least once during the month, out of a 60.1 million iPhone users. Based on a total of 43.2 million maps users in all, the Guardian estimates that there are about 8.3 million who use Google Maps. However, since about 2 million have not yet updated to iOS 6, the Guardian estimates that there are around 6.3 million users who use Google Maps on a monthly basis. That's a significant drop from 35 million believed to be using the service in September 2012.

if you have a limited paid phone subscription... no wonder ... Apple's map takes a lot less data compared to google as it is vector based vs bitmap base from google... I use apple when on the go and google while at home ... go figure.. ;-)

I'm an android user who uses an iPad as well and I can tell you that Apple Maps has become better for turn-by-turn navigation than Google maps. I've used Google Maps since Windows Mobile devices and I've noticed that it has gotten progressively worse and worse since Apple Maps was released. Now I almost hate Google Maps! It's cumbersome, has gotten less and less accurate, and they've removed features that people depended on for years like off line maps. I wish they would release Apple Maps in the Google Play Store.

What I meant was google is far less of an advanced system compared to ios, but if apple maps were to be on google, I don't see how every feature of the app can support googles especially if maps uses something only from apple besides flash or whatever google uses

When I connect my phone via bluetooth in my car, Apple streams directions through the car speakers while Google maps only goes through the phone. Its nice to be able to hear the turn by turn over the car speakers.

It works opposite for me in my car the opposite. I get turn by turn over the cars speakers while Apple Maps doesn't.

Given the installed base of iOS users and the removal of Google default, this is a non- article. How many of the average iOS users give a monkeys' what the engine is that provides the mapping so long as the icon works when selected, But Google is still better in the UK for map accuracy.

Now that I know, my response- uh obviously it's a way for turn by turn navigation nogoodnick pointed out above and you can put the directions in the car without looking at your idevice everytime!

I'll admit, I like Apple Maps, but it DOES have regular errors, so I use both. I prefer Apple Maps, but I'm not afraid to switch between the two, trying to find which offers the better maps/direction/correct addresses.

The main reason apple maps is used more is a default to apple maps when you click an address link. Allow users to set that default to whatever maps app they want and watch apple maps use go down considerably.

Apple maps are useless where I live. That said, why would you put a chart of facebook app monthly visitors against that of googles? It is misleading.

I like Google Maps on iOS too. It has more options such as route without freeway. I like the Google Maps UI better than Apple Map. I don't understand why Apple Map put the Distance Number is such a big font but the street name is so small. Google Map is more logical. I like to see the next street in bigger font. Not the distance to the next turn. It's more accurate than the GPS in my car. It has its own disadvantage too. I cannot search from my contact list is quite annoying.

I can't imagine why. Apple maps is horrible. Nice enough idea, basically stollen pixel for pixel from Google, but terrible execution. It drives me nuts on a regular basis. Also, I have a few business locations that are nicely listed with Google Places/Maps and dealing with Google can be trying sometimes but WOW! dealing with Apple maps is an exercise in futility. I don't think anyone even works in the maps department. In conclusion, Apple maps is horrible!!!

It is true they use TomTom's engine and it is true apple can't develop anything without buying, using or stealing other's works.

Google Maps take time to download on your phone. Most people are simply too lazy to do it. They use whatever comes on the phone and don't bother trying anything else.

Go figure. The Google maps for iOS is almost useless without being able to access the contacts on the phone. The only thing it's great for is transit directions, which I've found you can start in Apple Maps, pull up the start and end locations, and then have it open the transit directions in Google Maps app. automatically.
