Samsung Galaxy S5 to Get Fingerprint Scanner, Not Iris Scanner?

Posted January 21, 2014 at 2:35am by iClarified
Samsung is reportedly poised to follow Apple's lead and include a fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy S5; rather than an iris scanner as previously rumored, reports the Korea Herald.

“Among the different types of biometric sensors that Samsung is testing for its Galaxy S5, the tech giant will go for fingerprint authentication rather than unintuitive user experience of iris recognition,” said an industry source who declined to be named.

“Who would want to put their handset up close to their eyes for authentication in places like movie theaters and bed, or even while they are driving?,” the source added.

Samsung is apparently working towards offering fingerprint sensors under the display panel so you could press your fingertip to the screen for scanning. Apple's implementation requires a user press their fingertip to the home button for scanning.

Another reason why the iris scanner will probably not be installed in the Galaxy S5 is the need for a third camera module which will make the device thicker and require a different design.

Samsung. I hate you more than anything. I. Have you a chance by getting an S4 instead of a 5S and it was the biggest mistake of my life. Samsung should just stop making phones and tablets and work on TVs

Ha ha, in order to develop iris scanner they need to wait Apple to develop it first, coz they are not good at innovating but very good at copying.

5S...S5... Even the name is a mirror of Apple's. How very "innovative" Samsung! Yes please show us your "innovative" 64-bit, fingerprint sensor phone.

You guys are funny. It comes AFTER the S4 in the S series of phones. What are they supposed to call it? You can't say the name is copying. The S series of phones came out before the iPhone started using "S" as a part of the name of the phone. Relax, iSheep.

Samsung better produce the iris scanner like what was initially reported instead of following Apple's lead in innovation. Don't disappoint us Samsung.

If it happens to work like one then it's still the same idea.

That goes for a lot of Korean companies. It's in their blood. Look at Hyundai and Kia for example. They copy body and interior designs from various auto manufactures. I'm not saying all Korean products are crap but most are just copied knock offs with somewhat different designs and a brand name pasted on it.

This is Samsung. They are only good at copying Apple. They don't innovate intelligently. Just look at the stupid features they consider innovations on their phones. No body really uses them.

Are you aware that the iPhone is not the first phone to have a fingerprint scanner on it? BTW having the scanner underneath the screen is much more innovative than on a home button.

How is the scanner able to work under something that we scroll with, the only way that would work would be breaking the screen to do it to fit the button on it and easily reach the button, and yes sure apple's fingerprint scanner is kind of like the others but it works in a new way, on early devices all you had to do was move your finger down, 5s made it more simple, 360 readability, new scan used, and for the first time it's used to make purchases.
