Intel Aims to Eliminate All Cables With Next Generation 'Skylake' Platform

Intel announced that it wants to eliminate all cables from the personal computer at the Computex show. SVP Kirk Skaugen demonstrated wireless display, docking, and charging features at the event and said that these features will form the basis of the company's post-Broadwell "Skylake" reference designs.

For docking the high-speed WiGig standard is used to instant create a connection to a screen and peripherals when the computer is within range. Speeds are up to 7Gbps.

For power, Rezence, a magnetic resonance charging technology was demonstrated. The system can be installed under the surface of a table and can charge through two inches of wood. It can also charge multiple devices at the same time.

Rezence is promoted by the A4WP group who's members include Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo, Logitech and Panasonic. Other partners include Asus, Logitech, and Toshiba.

Recently, the A4WP and Power Matters Alliance (PMA) agreed to ensure cross compatibility with their rival wireless charging technologies. This is a step towards a stable standard.

Skylake is expected in 2015 and Intel's reference designs could arrive on the market in 2016.

Seems great ideas, but charging wireless using magnetic field?, mmmm..... Do I want to seat 4 or 5 hours in front of that computer inside the magnetic field? Any long term study of health related issues?
