Initial iOS 8 Adoption Rate Slower Than iOS 6 and iOS 7

Posted September 18, 2014 at 5:42pm by iClarified
Initial iOS 8 adoption rates seem to be lagging behind both iOS 6 and iOS 7, according to various tracking sites.

Tapjoy's research which reaches over 200 million iOS users a month shows that iOS 8 adoption is significantly slower than iOS 7. After 18 hours available iOS 8 is at a 6% adoption rate, compared to iOS 7, which was at 12%. According to their data, 6.6% of iPhone owners are using iOS 8, compared to 7.6% of iPod and 3.9% of iPad owners.

A quick look at the numbers tells an interesting story. For instance, while it took approximately seven hours for iOS 7 to reach 10% adoption, which was twice as fast as it took iOS 6 to reach that level of penetration, iOS 8 stands at under 6% eighteen hours after its initial availability, while iOS 7 was at 12% after the same time period.

Mixpanel on the other hand has current usage rates at iOS 8 14.75% and iOS 7 at 81.6%.Finally, Fiksu has a graph that shows 'hours since release.' Relative to prior iOS launches, iOS 8 reached 9.48% adoption, while iOS 7 was at 19.4% and iOS 6 was at 12.42%. All these percentages are iOS adoption rates 21 hours from their initial release.

There could be a number of reasons why iOS 8 has seen slower adoption rates. iOS 7 was filled with hype by consumers as it brought an entire new look and feel for the first time to iOS. In addition, iOS 8 requires up to 6GB of free space to install the update OTA, which could cause some people to hold off on an update.

I've actualy reverted back to 7.1.2 because iOS 8 slows my iPhone 5 down.

Lucky you. I think every iPhone below yours shouldn't update right now. I have had delays when texting and weird screen sizings in various apps when using ios8.

Although there are difficulties the slow download would be the big blocker. I upgraded 1 phone at about 2:30 ET and it took 2 hours. Had another to do when I got home at 7:00 and the file download was estimated to be 7 hours. I gave up on that one for now. Comparing percentages is rather a bad comparison at this point when the absolute number has swamped the Internet.

Btw iClarified needs to update their app because it's annoying having the text all the way up behind the icons ( carrier, clock, battery...)

Many blogs telling to wait for the update bcoz of iCloud Drive, Continuty with Yosemite, some laggy issues in 4S. But I got update yesterday Apple really done iOS well. I don't feel any laggy in 4S. It will reach maximum when Yosemite released.

iOS didn't give any kind of push notifications for IOS8. Previous times it had always given a notification that an upgrade was available. I found out that the update was available from iClarified.

Several issues here: 1) Older device incompatibility, 2) awaiting JB and 3) waiting to see how well it works. For myself, I have no choice since I ordered a new phone. So I'll wait and see how I like it before I update my iPad. But chances, I'll leave it as is to maintain my jailbreak.

I imagine this will change when the 6 starts filling hands. While I do still see a lot of 4s out there (not included in IOS 8), I imagine a lot of those folks will upgrade when the supplies are more plentiful.

That is what I intended, should be read as fours, not four s. Probably should have added a hyphen or apostrophe or something.

This is easy; the release happened on Wednesday 10am PST. Most people are at work don't have the luxury of downloading a fairly large file. The file is not 4.6 for it barely hit 1gig but requires a lot of time to install. Besides the traffic it caused, my download literally took 1.5 hour to finish on a high speed internet. Your lucky if it doesn't restart due to traffic. Wait till this weekend or next... The number will change.

How can you upgrade if that crap requires 4.6G of available space, who has that much space available!!! Just saying

You'd try and update it through iTunes for that matter. Thank you.

Well maybe its because they chose to keep it from being available for the iPhone 4, which is still one if the most used models of iPhone

Did you mean the most sold on craigslist? iPhone 4 barely handles iOS 7 and considering it for 8 is crazy. Sell that Phone and get something for it.
