Apple in Talks With Yahoo and Microsoft to Replace Google as Default iOS Search Engine

Apple's deal with Google, the one that makes it the default search engine on your iPhone, is set to expire next year, notes The Information. The site reports that rivals Microsoft and Yahoo are already pitching Apple SVP Eddy Cue on the idea of switching to their search engines as the default provider for mobile Safari.

Google has been the default search engine in Safari since 2007 and while it's still the best search engine, Apple has been trying to distance itself from Google products and services. It got rid of YouTube on iOS, ditched Google Maps, and most recently chose Bing as the default search provider for Siri and Yosemite's Spotlight. This would appear to give Microsoft a leg up on Yahoo; however, it would still be a big step to drop Google as Safari's default.

Notably, Yahoo has made some progress recently as well. It managed to become the default search engine in Firefox, getting the company to drop Google for at least the next five years.

I quit Google for bing over a year a ago and haven't looked back. Doesn't matter what the default is; it just needs to have choice so everyone is happy. I will never make Google anything a choice for me.

If you go to Settings then Safari you can right now choose Bing or Yahoo, so if we will still have the choice of Google it's fine by me.

It's better they start them selfs making a goode search engine. No one will make search in yahoo or Bing, Google is the best search, and everyone who have apple whant or relly on a search engine of Apple ( A good one) or will be forever Google.

Apple search engine would be stunning. What I would love to see them do is for image search, draw what you're looking for and it uses the closest resemblance it can find even from YouTube videos or do that in video search and even include what site they are from.

Google is a way better search engine. There is no comparison with Yahoo or Bing of Google. Google is miles ahead of other search engines.

It would matter because Google just happens to be the best search engine there is. I've tried using bing even with all the incentives and its just not as appealing to me. You can tell the difference right away between Google and the others. You would think that Microsoft with its billion dollar backer (Bill Gates) would have better quality things.

The looks of Microsoft nowadays says it all. I once liked them until 2012. Haven't been involved with any microscopic minded crap since then.

To be completely honest it would definitely matter if Google wasn't the default search engine in iOS or any Apple product because the average person who goes on the Internet to research something uses Google instantly to find what they desire. Apple has their business they are dealing with and unless it's a problem with budgeting or partnering with another company it isn't mandatory to market another company's search engines . This is an idea which Apple should discuss for KEEPING Google as the default search engine for only Apple products and if another company shall offer to incorporate Their search engine too.

I see why they care scared of google, because am sure that from their survey they have noticed that people would rather use google apps than apple apps on iOS and OS X

not as much as you! What if this means they finally make their own search engine. After years of what Google had, they had their own stuff. I wouldn't give my hopes up on their work that easily.

Apple cares about the consumer experience* *as long as that experience is constantly forcing them to spend more money on additional Apple products that are only necessary due to the completely unnecessary restrictions we set. Google is evil because they're not as greedy as us and their interests are aligned with the consumer's, so they offer better longer lasting products for less money. Pure evil! Great artists steal, but only Apple can decide who is or is not an artist...

Spotlight Search was rendered almost useless by Bing search. Turned it off and it works great again.

Dude, where have you been the 5 people of of 45 millions users that got lost on their first initial attempt at replacing Gollible Maps? I still get frustrated when I use google for you will definitely be lost 35 percent of time. Nobody is complaining just switch apps slick. To this day as road warrior, I never have gotten lost with Apple Maps. Google will have a lot of patching to do with new developments and rural areas.

I hated yahoo. Still hate yahoo search engine and email. I'm glad they at least let us to change it to our preference.

Yes, it would matter. I hate yahoo because they have the absolute worst websites. And bing doesn't give as good search results as Google.
