Apple to Rely More Heavily on Samsung for iPhone 6 and Apple Watch Components?

Apple to Rely More Heavily on Samsung for iPhone 6 and Apple Watch Components?

Samsung is reportedly set to supply an increasing number of components for the iPhone 6, a change in Apple recent moves to distance itself from the company, says BusinessKorea.

According to industry sources on Nov. 25, the iPhone 6 will feature batteries manufactured by Samsung SDI. Some raise the possibility that Samsung's TLC NAND flash will also be used in the iPhone 6.

Notably, Apple went with Toshiba's TLC NAND flash for the 128GB models of the iPhone 6 and memory from SK Hynix, Toshiba, and SanDisk in the 64GB models. However, there have been user reports of unexpected crashes and devices that are stuck in a boot loop which are being blamed on the TLC NAND flash in higher capacity devices.

Apple is said to be considering whether or not to replace the TLC NAND flash made by Toshiba with Samsung's own TLC NAND flash. If the two companies reach a deal, Samsung would supply both the DRAM and NAND flash to the iPhone 6.

Additional, there are rumors that Apple and Samsung are jointly developing communication chips for the iPhone. The chips could be unveiled late next year.

While Samsung was the supplier of application processors for the iPhone 5, TSMC scored as the AP supplier for the iPhone 6. However, it now appears as though Apple will return to Samsung and its 14-nm FinFET production process for the next generation iPhone.

Finally, Samsung is also preparing to supply APs for Apple Watch, according to the report.

One reason given for the possible partnership between the two firms is the growing influence of Chinese smartphone makers.

Because when Apple moved to tsmc for chip making Samsung felt hurt. This is exactly how it is when Apple is with them. Need Apple to live. No wonder their ads are always blaming them with no sense.
