Autodesk Makes Its Design Software Free for Students, Instructors, and Academic Institutions

Posted December 2, 2014 at 8:31am by iClarified
Autodesk has announced that its design software is now free for students, instructors, and academic institutions worldwide.

Through this action, more than 680 million students and educators from over 800,000 secondary and post-secondary schools in 188 countries can take advantage of free access to Autodesk’s professional software and services for use in classrooms, labs, and at home.

“The way we make things is changing rapidly, and we need a workforce ready to design for new manufacturing and construction techniques. By providing free professional design tools to students, faculty members and academic institutions around the world, we’re helping get industry ready for the next phase,” said Carl Bass, CEO, Autodesk.

This announcement follows an earlier initiative at academic institutions in the United States as part of President Obama’s ConnectED initiative.

Autodesk has been gradually expanding free access to its leading design software to academic institutions across Asia Pacific and Europe. It's also providing academic institutions with the company's suite of cloud-based design products including the A360 collaboration platform.

I know what it is stupid. I use it every day. I wasn't referring to casual users.

Wow why not just charge everyone a reasonable price instead? Give it away to 680 million for free. Then charge the rest $4000 each. Seems you could accomplish more by dropping the price to $60 and everyone would go for it. Works for game software. Why not autocad!?

Because stupid, AutoCAD is a totally different type of software from games, and the tool is mostly used by students, companies, game developers, and other people. It's not meant for regular people.
