Google has ended 2014 with more apps than Apple, according to AppFigures.

In a blog post today, AppFigures notes that "Google finally closed the gap and actually jumped ahead of Apple, ending the year with more than 1.43 million apps compared to 1.21 million. Amazon, although a distant third, grew its catalog by nearly 90% to 293k apps."

The number of developers on Google Play also grew tremendously, exceeding Apple for the third year in a row. Google is now distributing apps from almost 400,000 developers. That compares to around 275,000 for Apple.

Finally, AppFigures reports that all three app stores grew by at least 50% with the fastest growing iOS app categories being Business, Food & Drink, Lifestyle, Social Networking, and Catalogs.

Would have to agree with #Jackson Browne. As for all others claiming half the apps on Google Play are crap compared to Apple’s, would mean they also own an android device and have tried plenty of (same category) apps from both stores for comparison– otherwise their statement is the only crap here. Neither of the ‘stores’ have exclusivity to prime apps e.g. Sports (NBA, NHL, NFL), NAV apps (Navigon, TomTom, Garmin), Business, Social…..etc As for Google Play becoming/being bigger than Apple was just a matter of time as there are more android users than iOS users worldwide, meaning the developers have a larger consumer pool in the android market to target which again means more potential earnings.

I don't see any quality application that is exclusive to Google Play.

The only reason Google has more it's because the coding is open source material.

This does seem like pretty useless information, at least in isolation. The meaningful comparison is useful apps between the two platforms, admittedly a subjective evaluation. It is clear that most App Store apps are worthless. I assume that the same is true of most Google Play apps. Even so, on whichever platform one uses, as long as there is a sufficient number of good apps, isn't that all that really matters?

In other news, google play has less restrictions on the apps that are submitted, therefore they allow more crap to flow into their store. I can buy 1 diamond for $1000 from store 1 or I can buy 1 Tonne of dog shit for $1000 from store 2. Just because I get more from store 2 does not mean store 2 is better.

The bigger impact and downfall of Samsung-@ssamsung. Paying trolls to do what they do best. More apps isn't everything, what about overall download year after year? Exactly.
