Toyota Currently Has No Plans to Support Apple CarPlay in the U.S.

Despite being on Apple's list of committed partners, Toyota says it currently has no plans to support CarPlay in the U.S., reports the New York Times.

John Hanson, the national manager of Toyota’s advanced technology communications, said while the company talked frequently with both Google and Apple, it currently had no plans to adopt Android Auto or CarPlay in the United States.

“We may all eventually wind up there, but right now we prefer to use our in-house proprietary platforms for those kinds of functions,” Mr. Hanson said.

The announcement is likely to disappoint many iOS and Android users; however, Toyota may not be able to withstand market pressure for long. Many other manufacturers including GM, Volkswagon, Hyundai, Audi, and others have already begun to release vehicles with CarPlay support. Apple and Google are likely to improve their in-vehicle software far faster than vehicle manufacturers can improve their infotainment systems. It may not be long until their already cumbersome systems fall further behind and consumers begin to demand a system that works with their mobile devices of choice.

Would Apple CarPlay or Android Auto support make the difference in your purchase of a new vehicle? Let us know in the comments!

So looking forward to having Google and Apple bombard me with advertising in my car, tracking my every move, directing me to their paid vendors through so-called relevant ads to my NAV. Toyota has been particularly sensitive to releasing private customer data - best to let Apple and Google figure out the boundary. Last thing I want is for ads for condoms to show up on my NAV when I'm driving with the family. ;).

This is to protect Japanese People from NSA. Imagine if your car can tracked and controlled by the government if they want to?

My Honda's system is awkward and counterintuitive. A unified, well designed interface like that in iOS would be a strong incentive to get a new car!

Absolutely! Nothing beats instant connectivity and familiarity with the system we've all been using than trying to learn other system again.

Absolutely. Infotainment on my Mazda is OKish still far from perfect.

Absolutely!! Currently I own a 2013 Prius and I am severely disappointed at the Entune software built into the NAV/Radio system. So many bugs and incompatibilities. PLUS hassling the dealership Maintenance departments to update the stupid thing without charging you and arm and a leg. At least CarPlay and Android would most likely allow the user to update on there personal data or home wifi. Now if they allowed the car to detect what device you are using and have the option of Android or Apple! That would revolutionize the industry again!!
