Manfrotto has unveiled the Digital Director, a new accessory for iPad Air that lets you remotely control your Nikon or Camera DSLR and use the iPad's display as a live preview monitor.

The Digital Director interface lets you manage your entire photo and video workflow, from setting your camera to sharing your pictures via a tethered iPad application. You can control key camera functions such as focus point, exposure, aperture, and speed for both photo and video, and get on-screen focus peaking for crisp accurate focus. Still images can even be downloaded directly to the iPad for immediate post-production and sharing.

The Digital Director connects to your camera using a up to 10-meter USB cable, offering a stable reliable connection. The iPad docks into the Digital Director using its Lightning port. You can then mount the device to your rig, a tripod, or hand hold it to remotely control your camera.

Features:
● All the DSLR’s key parameters can be monitored and dynamically modified (Exposure, ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Manual Focus, WB, Image Quality, Focus/Camera/Drive Modes).
● Effective real time “Live View” monitoring through a cable connection.
● Dynamic histogram and audio level display
● Interactive Focus can be used to select the focus point anyway on the screen.
● Digital zoom magnifies the selected focus point to ensure crisp accurate focus.
● Focus Peaking Filter highlights the focused profiles on the image.
● Auto-adjustment for portrait orientation.
● Easy shoot
● Downloaded high resolution file to iPad and check all image details, including focus and exposure
● In-app image adjustments such as exposure, contrast, light, crop, rotate
● Image ratings
● Job organizing (albums, shoot profiles and connection profiles).
● Share via FTP, E-mail, social networks (Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, etc.) by moving images to camera roll.

Currently, the Digital Director will only work with Nikon and Canon cameras. No word yet on whether support is limited to specific models. The device will not work with video cameras such as the BlackMagic. Hopefully, there's plans to bring it to more cameras in the near future.

The Manfrotto Digital Director will be available in June and is priced at $499.99. We'll be taking a closer look at the device once it's available so please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.

it would be more better if manfrotto could also make it flexible for iphones as well.. This gives photogs the option to choose what device they prefer to use. It's also an advantage for photogs who are always on the move and prefer to go light... Just my 2 cents.. Thanks chris..
