The reported touch pad can be used for scrolling and navigation and there will also be two other buttons on the remote. The new remote will likely replace the current circular-click wheel remote that ships with the Apple TV.
While rumors have been circulating for years now on a revamped Apple TV, this could be the year that we finally get an overhauled Apple TV. Apple has reportedly been in negotiations with TV networks on some sort of bundle that will go along with the device.
