Apple Posts Temporary Solution to Fix Crashed Messages App

Posted May 29, 2015 at 4:01am by iClarified
Apple has posted some temporary solutions that can fix the Messages app after it's been crashed by a specific series of unicode characters.

The bug, which was recently discovered and been demonstrated on video here, can cause Messages to quit unexpectedly.

Apple is aware of an iMessage issue caused by a specific series of unicode characters and we will make a fix available in a software update. Until the update is available, you can use these steps to re-open the Messages app.

● Ask Siri to "read unread messages."
● Use Siri to reply to the malicious message. After you reply, you'll be able to open Messages again.
● In Messages, swipe left to delete the entire thread. Or tap and hold the malicious message, tap More, and delete the message from the thread.

There is now a fix in Cydia called "ineffective power" in Karen's repo. Nice to be jailbroken for up-to-date fixes!

Remember that the iMessage app needs to be closed or the user needs to be in other apps so the crash can work. It would not work if you are already on the iMessage app.

I've tried this on about 10 different iPhone ranging from iPhone 4S-6 plus and it never crashed the phone. Some were even jailbroken.

Sounds like you did not send the right message (maybe you have extra characters in it). We had fun in the office with this and every single iphone was crashed at least once.

Wow. How to fix it yourself. Wow. This would never have happened on Mr. Jobs' watch. An update would've been pushed out to fix it and no one in the iOS department would have went home or slept until it was. Another disappointment by Tim Cook.

Apple still does as good as him, but how would Jobs have to know somehow the message would have appeared that easily? How is he suppose to predict that? Truly a desperate excuse for Jobs still being alive. I miss him yes but what does this prove?
