Some iPhone and iPad Users Are Having Touch ID Problems With iOS 9.1

Apple's release of iOS 9.1 may have introduced a Touch ID problem for some iPhone and iPad users, reports Forbes. The site took notice of numerous support threads (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) on Apple's Support Communities complaining of problems with fingerprint recognition.

The complaints are similar: users running iOS 9.1 find Touch ID either refuses to recognise a user’s fingerprint, has become highly unreliable or doesn’t even register a fingerprint pressed against it. Users have tried hard resets (holding in the power and home button for 10 seconds) and complete factory resets without any success.

Notably, Forbes spent a few days discussing the problem with Apple before going to print; however, the company's official statement on the matter is: "No comment".


As Apple is aware of the reports, presumably it is working to identify and rectify the problem. Unfortunately, the signing window for iOS 9.0.2 has been closed and you can't downgrade from iOS 9.1.

When i first got my 6S it was amazing but after updating its not as responsive and sometimes doesnt work at all.

iOS 9.0.2: no touch I.d. Issues, jailbroke a little over a week ago, installed no update to stop apple's "when would you like to update? Between 2 & 4 am? Or now?" Message that came up every day constantly. No complaints at all here:)

I had it with apple, too many problems,I went back to my old motorola flip, no more smart phone for me.

You could've resettled the devices after every update or update using iTunes to get good firmware. It works either way. Never had problems when doing this. No more outdated phones for me.

My iPhone 6S is having intermittent success using Touch ID (mostly failed attempts) since upgrading to 9.1.

Iphone 6s, sometimes the touch ID doesn't work at all, I have to put in manually the login code and then it works fine again for a few day's.

I have an iPhone 6s Plus and an iPad Air 2. I am not experiencing or have not experienced any Touch ID issues with either device. I have noticed when people I know update OTA they have issues. I choose to always update via iTunes and hence have not had any of these problems I keep reading about. So my advise to all having software problems: try installing a fresh iOS firmware with iTunes, set up the device as new and from that point update with iTunes.

Not having issues with Touch ID but I am having issues with sound intermittently not working causing me to restart my phone to get sound back.

I have a iPhone 6 with iOS 9.1 and having problems since iOS 8. Just did a fresh install last week so let's see how long it lasts. Normally not more than 10-15 days

I own a 5s and works perfectly. Not once did it read my fingers incorrectly.

I have not had any issues on my 6S Plus when it comes to the Touch ID Sensor, But i have issues where the device stops responding and i have to do a hard reset to it. It freezes from time to time as well. I have the 128GB Option so i know storage is not the problem. I think the software update has a few bugs that need to be addressed hopefully in the next update.

I had this issue all the time with my 6s plus on 9.1 and Touch ID is still spotty at times but heavily reduced on 9.2 public beta

I am having this issue and I put in additional fingerprint with other finger. Let's see how long that works.
