Google has been looking into designing its own smartphone chips and outsourcing the manufacturing of those designs to component makers, reports The Information.

The move would be similar to one Apple made years ago and could make high-end Android devices more competitive with the iPhone.

In the discussions, which occurred this fall, Google representatives put forward designs of chips it was interested in co-developing, including a phone’s main processor. The designs enable new features Google hopes to implement within Android software in the next few years, according to people briefed on the discussions.

They would have had a chance to compete with apple as stated if they thought of this year's ago before apple now had the advantage of optimized ram performance. You know how iPhone still has less ram and still does better is what I am saying and how Google is on the edge of having their chance.
