Tim Cook: 'Why Would You Buy a PC Anymore?'

Posted November 10, 2015 at 3:36pm by iClarified
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently spoke with The Telegraph about the new iPad Pro, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Britain's Investigatory Powers Bill.

“I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?”, asked Cook, who recently revealed he travels with just an iPad Pro and iPhone.

“Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones,” Cook argues.

Apple hopes the iPad Pro with its enhanced sound system will be popular with music and movie consumers and with creatives. “If you sketch then it’s unbelievable..you don’t want to use a pad anymore," Cook says.

The Apple CEO also addressed the Apple Watch saying that it would not become a medical device that required FDA approval; however, he hinted that Apple could release something else that would.

“We don’t want to put the watch through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) process. I wouldn’t mind putting something adjacent to the watch through it, but not the watch, because it would hold us back from innovating too much, the cycles are too long. But you can begin to envision other things that might be adjacent to it -- maybe an app, maybe something else.”

Cook said sales of the new Apple TV have been going very well. “We got out of the shoot extremely strong; very strong in the first few days.” He also left the door open for an Apple TV streaming service. “We will see. The key question for us is: can we do something better, that acts as a catalyst? If we conclude that we can, then we would. But I wouldn’t do something just to do something.”

Finally, Cook addressed the Investigatory Powers Bill in Britain that would force companies to provide unencrypted communications to the police or spy agencies if served with a warrant.

"To protect people who use any products, you have to encrypt. You can just look around and see all the data breaches that are going on. These things are becoming more frequent. They can not only result in privacy breaches but also security issues. We believe very strongly in end to end encryption and no back doors," Cook warns. “We don’t think people want us to read their messages. We don’t feel we have the right to read their emails.”

“Any backdoor is a backdoor for everyone. Everybody wants to crack down on terrorists. Everybody wants to be secure. The question is how. Opening a backdoor can have very dire consequences.”

Hey timmy I do my everyday coding, encoding, programming, bug testing, office documenting, presentation, networking, printing, gaming, etc. on a pc so can an ipad pro do all those? heck it isnt even capable of using external devices eg. flash drives, dvd-drives, etc. So yeah keep dreaming.

If Notebooks were not able to replace Desktops, why should the iPad Pro be? Even if the iPad Pro could replace my MacBook Pro, i'd never sell my Retina iMac for it.

And yet, they still make MacBooks. I guess you have to give people what they want. I doubt he would miss that 4% marketshare anyway.

How? There are many others offering the same products. Secondly, can't afford, don't buy genius.

Which planet are you from to ask how? Apple is proprietary, if you understand that!!

Thanks, finally a good answer. And by the way, Apple is not that overpriced, I paid 3100 for a Retina iMac, which is not cheap, but if you think of 4k displays that go to 20'000 it's quiet affordable. And what you said about removable parts is true, neither the Surface Pro 4 nor the Surface Book for example have removable ram or hard disks. And to everyone who does not like Apple, why do you read that forums? I don't like Android, so I don't read its forums rather than telling anyone there, how dump there are to buy android and to get an iPhone. Everyone how he or she likes...

Just because Timmy here doesn't need to do any real work, doesn't mean we don't either.

Another reason you can work on them I usually build my own PC so if hardware failure happens I'm able to change out anything The other I find using a PC is easy to get work done and I've had OS X MacBooks for the 8 years ! On the other hand I find myself always spending money on anti virus and other stuff with a PC, But most every thing you do it always comes out in zip files and that's a big advantage

As a gamer, I definitely found this kind of insulting. Why a PC? The question is why not? There still hundreds of things and customizations that you can do on a PC that is hard or not possible to do on a tablet yet. And I say "yet" because we cannot be blind to where the future is pointing to. However, there' son tablet or phone that can yet provide me with the versatility, power, OS freedom and gaming freedom and extensive catalogue as a PC. Consoles? C'mon! Every person with a standard knowledge of hardware can say that still there's no console that can outmatch a gaming rig in power, graphics and performance. Sorry, but that's how Tim Cook pushes people to look the alternatives.

You guys are taking that statement out of context. They're currently people who once computing device are their Phablets, and can get by with only a tablet and a phone. People who run macros , developers & coders , are the minority and not the majority. Most people go online to check emails , pay bills & shop. They don't write software or code. Remember that argument , iPhones don't have flash ? When Steve jobs at the time was trying to tell everyone HTML5 is the way to go, only to see a few year later Adobe came out and said the same thing and discontinued flash on Moore phones. Times are changing apps are doing what we never imagined possible .

thats good that we leave in a free world (at least for many) and the best we can have is what we born with: "THE POWER OF THE CHOICE", it is not because a powerful guy you owns the time on the media and comes out in the morning to say that you have to buy a iPad because is whatever he thinks it is, that I would go to buy one. I love my Laptop, I don't think to change it, and when the day comes that I will have to change it, I will buy a new generation Laptop. and you can stick the iPad in wherever place you feel you want to do it, that I will never buy one again in my life.

Well there much PCs actually do that a iPad will not. Sorry Tim iPads are nice but very limited. Some of us do much more than play games or sketch and draw lol.

Guys, this statement is asking about productive stuff that can now be done at your fingertips on an iPad. This is in no way targeting to gamers. He's talking about work being done on it, and no this isnt about giving up macs. Asking this questions is like asking 'who wants a flip phone anymore?' He's trying to prove his point here, plus he didn't say "computer" in his question did he thereby not completely replacing every computer of others and what he made.

Here's my question: If the iPad Pro is so great, why would you buy a MacBook (Pro/ Air/ Whatever) anymore?
Answer
Answer - November 11, 2015 at 7:50pm
Because you are a fan of Apple which makes you want to buy them all.

Reason I could get more out of it then an OS X machine The only thing about OS X is you don't need to shop for anything No antivirus no external hardware Still OS X isn't as quick getting things done as a windows machine

Why?! I like my iphone but OSX (iOS) is too limited. How I can run Windows on the iPad, have multiple user accounts and run my Steam games or even simple dev software like Brackets or Adobe suite? Come on Tim, you're not convincing me to buy an iPad:P

Can you run Excel with macros on an iPad Pro? Additionally, most Enterprise-level Health Care software is not certified for use on iOS level devIces. I wish that TC's view of the world was accurate, but it isn't yet even for real work. It probably never will be for gaming, which requires an inordinate amount of CPU and graphics power.
